i can remember being at a show in Glasgow a year or two back. we were a couple of rows from the front and a guy pulled out soemthing similar. a pair of binos like the ones they used on battleships during the war to spot for the u-boat periscopes 100 miles away!. we were in fuckin hysterics!

Can anybody remember that horse race 10 years or so ago where in the final furlong the lead horse suddenly stopped in its tracks and then kind of shuddered to its left? I thought it was a heart attack, but it wasn't...

They reckon somebody had rigged some binos up with a laser or flash device to deliberately startle the horse and make it lose! If I remember right similar things happened at a few other meetings around the time and there was a bit of a scandal about it.

I don't think for one minute this mush was up to anything more than a piss take (or maybe he does have shocking eyesight), but imagine if you could rig something like that up to cause temporary (3 seconds or so) blindness to a boxer! 8)

With those now-commonplace laser pointers, that sort of thing would be easy to do. You'd want to do in broad daylight, though, otherwise the beam would be easily visible from the side.

I wonder if there's documented cases of outdoor fights where fans of one of the fighter used sunlight reflecting e.g. off a watch face to try to blind the opponent - that would be a low-tech version of the same trick.

You know, I've often thought we don't make the most of our weather boxing-wise. Think about it. William Abelyan fights out of sunny Las Vegas and was raised in sunny California. Stick him in with Scott Harrison on a winter's night in Glasgow OUTDOORS. I'm amazed none of our promoters have ever really used this tactic with visiting fighters. I know Scandinavian promoters do.
It's the same with Glencoffe Johnson. The Jamaican fights out of Florida and would really struggle fighting someone outdoors in November in Britain in my opinion.
We ought to make more of our weather conditions to get an edge.
