Does B-Hop become number 1 p4p if he schools Kovalev?

I actually think there is a real possibilty he can land straight pot shots on Kovalev and confuse him with his movement and old man tactics. The pot shot counters will keep Kovalev honest. I'm expecting a schooling here. That's just one mans opinion though but if it does happen, does Hopkins usurp Pacman and Mayweather and become best pound for pound in the world?

Do we ignore him being dominated by and losing to Dawson, getting dropped multiple times and held to a draw by Pascal, and being hit plenty against Karo Murat, someone who was already beaten more convincingly by Clev? Do we overlook Shumenov and Cloud's dubious statuses as champions entering their bouts with Hopkins that was partially due to each of them to be gifted wins against Campillo?
I'd be extremely impressed if he schooled Kovalev and quite surprised given that I thought people like Cloud and Murat arguably won 4 rounds against him. I don't think it would boost him to the top spot (I believe fighters like Mayweather and Ward have beaten better opponents over the last 3-4 years with fewer problems) but it would definitely move him up.

No way. Arguably it doesn't even make him number 1 at light-heavyweight. Dawson beat him and Stevenson beat Dawson.

Dawson beat him over 2.5 years ago.
Would Dawson beat Hopkins in a third fight? I'd favour Hopkins.

Strong possibility it will play out as you say, 8 years ago i'd have probably put money on it, Kovalev's style appears made for Hopkins, but at 49 and looking poor in his last fight against Shumenov, serious question marks have to be asked about just how much Hopkins has left in the tank.

The proof is not in the pudding. The rice and raisins are in the pudding. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
On a serious note though I agree with crusader. B-Hops record is not that impressive recently, both of his belts are borderline bogus and defeating Kovalev, who most ppl don't have in p4p, is not enough to make him #1. He will be firmly in my p4p though. Although that aint happening either because Hopkins isnt winning this.

A perfect example of how any CV can be picked apart concentrating solely on the negatives or boosted by doing the opposite.

I think the negatives are all that are needed to answer the question given common knowledge of what other elite fighters have accomplished. We know that people like Floyd Mayweather and Andre Ward have consistently beaten good opponents, including fighters like Canelo Alvarez and Carl Froch who regularly appear in top 10 P4P lists, but over the last few years have they experienced anything comparable to a one-sided loss to Chad Dawson or a draw against Pascal, let alone both?
Hopkins is a very good fighter, but there are simply too many shortcomings in his performances over the last 3-4 years for me to say that he should be the highest ranked professional boxer in the world even if he 'schools' Kovalev.

In that case, the proof of the pedding is in the testing.
