Matchroom and titles

Eddie hearn regularly puts shows on with silver and intercontinental titles on the line but why does he never put his fighters in for IBO titles?
The belt is ideal for some one like Brian Rose. If he can't get a shot against Bundrage he is unlikely to beat any of the other title holders. He could then defend against Ishe smiths and alfonso Gomez of this world who would prepare him better for stepping up. Equally I understand ola oflabi holds the version but Clev vs Bellew would seem bigger with that belt on the line.
Others you'd consider giving shots to are Anthony crolla. The ones who are in strong divisions etc.
Anyone know why they ignore the IBO?

Klitshko and golovkin.

Belts previously held by Ricky Hatton, Prince Naseem, manny pacquiao, Roy jones jr, Bernard Hopkins, and Lennox Lewis. If these guys recognise it then why don't we on these borders.

The belt does look ace.

Last fight I recall for it on these shores was Derry Mathews fighting marisili.

Mathews v Marsili was actually a decent fight aswel.

but i agree with you, i think it would give people that in between stepping stone before fighting for one of the legitimate top 4 belts, your bound to attract higher profile fighter for the IBO belt than for a WBC International Silver belt

The Silver Belts are just a one-off stepping stone fight to get a ranking with the body - they are a means to an end. The boxer is looking for a big money shot at a major title.

The IBO etc. are move like the end result for those boxers who are above a certain level but not proper world level - like a Brian Rose. They can then defend their IBO title 3 or 4 times a year and make a few quid.

I'd prefer good old fashioned British and Commonwealth titles rather than International,Inter-continental,Silver or even IBO titles,Matchroom rarely have any interest in the Lonsdale or CW belts, they'd rather force fighters like Callum Smith right into world title eliminators which is a shame IMO because if the biggest player in British boxing devalue the domestic titles then pretty soon there's gonna be British title fights not shown on TV

The Sykes/Kays British SFW fight wasnt on TV and theres been a few Commonwealth scraps not shown but i think every British and Commonwealth title fight should be on TV like it used to

Plus the stick Quigg gets for his paper title, could you imagine the flak a british fighter would get for being an IBO champ,Im sure most fighters would be honoured to fight for that title but as soon as they won it the daggers would be out

Surely the IBO title would carry more weight than interim, silver or international belts. Or even regular belts below super champs?

Agree there needs to be more emphasis on British titles but majority of the title holders are shown on c5, allegedly or sky.

Only lee Haskins fights seem to always drift under the radar

You need to understand the workings of the alphabet organisations. All about the sanction fees my friend.

If I could change one thing about boxing it would be the amount of different organizations and belts.

It will never happen now but it would be great to go back to having one World Champion per division.

International, intercontinental belts etc boost a fighter's ranking with that body and put them closer to boxing for that world title. The same cannot be said of the IBO unfortunately. It's a shame as the IBO is the only main world body that has an untarnished name.

If British promoters went down the IBO road we could end up with situation like they have in South Africa now where domestic fighters are going around calling themselves world champions. We had that here in the early to mid 90s with the WBO and through the 2000s with the original WBU (not those two bogus versions that are floating around now).

I'd rather see an international title fight than a IBO title fight, simply because it would stop fighters from pretending to be world champions.

I noticed on Wazza's show in Liverpool a couple weeks ago that Derry and Beefy were fight for the WBA Continental title??

Thats a new one on me ,is it a new belt or have they just dropped the word "Inter" ?

It's the WBA so I'm 99.9% certain that it will be a new belt.

If we have fighters fighting for the IBO belt simply because they aren't good enough to beat any of the other champions then the title of 'World Champion' will have been devalued completely.

I agree about going down the British, Commonwealth & European route but that's gone completely out of fashion. We even have the WBO recognising their own European champion these days.

Unfortunately whilst promoters are willing to pay sanctioning fees for these Silver, International, Inter-Continental belts etc, then they'll just carry on dishing them out until every active boxer has one of these worthless titles.

I can understand the reasoning behind the Inter-continental,Silver ,etc belts its just that they were hardly ever contested on Friday Fight Night on Sky so why everywhere now??

It feels like every fighter who holds an Intercontinental or International title is British

Times change i suppose

Aren't most of these trinkets used so the promoter can promote 'Championship Boxing'?

Bit of both mate.
More and more now your fighter has to get hold of one of these "belts" to get a top 10 ranking and therefore a shot at the real title. To get hold of one you have to pay a sanction fee .......... its almost bribery by the alphabets.
On the other hand casual viewers get sucked into thinking there's a real belt up for grabs.
It's get a lot worse in recent years but has always been there in truth.
Rhodes had to fight for the WBC International and win to maintain his top ten ranking.

Wo wo wo. So most, if not all, agree that we'd ideally want less world titles yet a 5th one is being championed? Strange.

I'd prefer to see guys holding an IBO title rather than holding the international ones consistently. Plus from a boxers perspective it would probably set them up better.

Another thing to note is that the IBO uses computerised rankings (which I do fully understand) and as someone previously mentioned is untarnished in comparison to the others.

It wouldn't my friend.
If you work with the IBO the rest drop you including all of your fighters from their rankings.
Think about it ..............

Exactly how I feel that post.

my biggest hang up with the whole Matchroom/Sky love affair is the devaluation of the lonsdale belt/domestic small hall fights.

Say what you want, but at least when we had the weekly Friday Fight Nights the best domestically generally fought each other in some crackers (its very unlikely a Macklin/Moore, Gomez/Arthur or Mutley/Anderson would happen these days, they'd probably be first on in some big arena with no atmosphere and about 4 people watching, against some argentinian for a silver/bronze/orange belt thats basically all about the ranking)

Also in the interest of fairness FW and allegedly whilst being very good value for money IMO seem less interested in the domestic small hall bills too, when the channel first started they seemed quite keen and had some good domestic bills on but they have dwindled and are now pretty much non existent.

I think the broadcast costs are prohibitive. He keeps the York hall shows going but otherwise the small ones have more or less dried up. It costs an absolute fortune to do a live broadcast.
