Someone is going to have to explain to me what this 'race card' is all about. It seems to me, and correct me if I'm wrong, that it's a term used by white people to dismiss any discourse on issues of race that have been raised by black or ethnic minority peoples in a vain attempt to assure themselves, from their privileged position, that race shouldn't be an issue for anyone cus, ya know, I think black people are alright.

Hopkins has a point and he has a right to raise and discuss the issue. However many sports stars in the states have become very popular in the states regardless of race-OJ Simpson, De La Hoya, Jordan, Ali, and even Mayweather would examples of people who have done this, so while in some ways I would agree with Hopkins that if he had been white he may be a bigger star I am not sure how much you can also attribute to personality.

Would all of the above been even more popular had they been white? I would say undoubtedly. It is I think an uncomfortable truth.

After all, very few people have ever heard of African-American boxers like Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson, because the media ignored them.

Let's face it, the USA is a racist country where a black person can never be in a high position like president.

I truly believe that this kind of thing is part of the problem facing minorities.

Telling people they can't achieve or won't get a fair shake. It's an excuse.
Tells people...don't try too hard... We all know and accept that minorities have more to overcome.
Nobody would argue with that. But wallowing in the mud is not going to help.

I'm sure some guys who feel sorry for themselves will take great heart in this...

But come on. Hopkins needs to trun his attention to real injustices faced by his people.
Not the fact that he hasn't got as many millions as he thinks he should have.

To the casual fan Hopkins is perceived to as dirty fighter that bends the rules to win. He will never be loved like Foreman.

I thought Obama was Hawaiian.

Muhammad Ali transcended the sport more than any "white boy"... or anyone else for that matter. Bernard is just having a hard time grasping that it's more do to his style and personality than anything else. The easiest thing to do is to blame race. The history of the sport contradicts his claim.

No, I think Rocky is actually under-appreciated nowadays because of the color of his skin.

Because he's white, people say he fought "elderly heavyweights" yet all his opponents except for Moore (who Ali fought years later) were younger than Wladimir Klitschko is now (Wlad will be 39 in March).

I look at Marciano's BoxRec reveals that most of Rocky's opponents were actually close to his own age. And he was at a height and reach disadvantage against virtually all of them.

The level headed ones believe that there is still racial prejudice in the US. But it's not just against whites or blacks. It depends on your mindset. There are many prejudice against blacks, many against whites, many against anyone else who is not their own color. But to continue to harp on it means to keep it alive and kicking.

Tommy Morrison was never considered a great white hope. Morrison fought in the prisoned Tyson era. Bowe, Holyfield, Lennox Lewis.

No one in their right mind would have given Morrison a chance against those fighters, get real.

Morrison was popular cause he could punch. AND being white was a added bonus. Great White Hope LOL, that's B.S.

Thanks for that. I had no idea that we had completely eliminated all racial prejudices against blacks in the US and am so pleased to hear of this news. Why is this not being acknowledged in the liberal media? I'm not even sure that Fox has reported this.

Having said that, what Hopkins said was mostly nonsense. Hopkins is obvioulsy a great fighter but people like extreme personalities.


Ali, Tyson, and the 2nd coming of Foreman were all extreme. Ali's poetry and "I ain't got no quarrel with them vietcong." Tyson, at first was Cus's boy, and then he was a badass. GF stuffing cheeseburgers in his face during press conferences.

Hopkins is a great fighter, but he of course lacks great power, and while he is fairly bright, he comes across as just another dude. So no, if Hopkins was white, he still wouldn't be what everyone is talking about at work or at the pub.

Let's not forget that boxing is far less popular in the U.S. now compared to Marciano, Ali or even Tyson's times.
