Hi,

I am new (and clueless) to this. My Grandpa was a boxer in the late 1920's and early 1930's. There is one record for him here, on this website, when he knocked someone out in March 1930 (Leo Frank vs. Broadway Jones).

I want to put together an album of his boxing photos, letters, etc. that I have. I would like to get his complete boxing record to add to this collection, but don't know how to get it, or if such a thing exists. I contacted the California Athletic Commission and was told that they don't keep paper records and that they shredded everything prior to 1984. The arena that he boxed at (Foreman's Arena in San Jose, CA) is gone.

Does anyone have any idea of who to contact or what to do? Any information at all would be appreciated.

That's crazy, shredding everything prior to 1984!.... what a load of twits!!!.... 8)
Have you tried looking up the archives of your fathers local papers.... and the papers of the places where he fought?......... you may get some info that way.

Also pm Robert.snell (he's on a thread here about Tiger Jack Fox) he's very knowledgeable and helpful and is also looking up details of his father who was a boxer in the 20s.... so I'm sure he'll be able to give you some good advise!.... 8)

I would suggest hitting a Bay Area paper during that period, and trying to build his record from scratch. Even though there are editors on this site with access to the San Francisco Chronicle, I doubt any of us are sitting on results from this period, that we could help you with in the short term.

The arena was actually spelled as Forman's Arena. I believe it was named after the local promoter in San Jose, Ora Forman. Forman eventually became the promoter in Oakland during the 30's, after Tommy Simpson quit promoting in Oakland.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I will begin scouring newspapers. It's funny, I have a letter from a man named Theron Fox to my grandpa dated 1929. Mr. Fox was apparently the Sports Editor for the Mercury Herald (in San Jose) at the time. He is telling my grandpa that they want to use both his brother (I need to figure out which brother) and Jack Dufosee on the amateur card the following week. Also congratulates Grandpa for his win the previous week. At least I have a starting point for the newspapers!

I will be happy to have a look into the newspaper archive sites which i use to try and track down some details. It may take a while but hang in there. I have found the people who use this site to be very helpful bunch.
