Apparently lost sight in one if his eyes. Anyone know how?

Good fighter, enjoyed watching him on itv - should have won a belt really in my opinion. And should have fought khan but khan ducked him.

He got badly smashed in America , great fighter will be missed

One of the most exciting British fighters in the last decade. Absolute warrior, never took a step back and always went out on his shield when he lost.

Massive fan of Murray, a true British warrior right up there with the likes of Jamie Moore and Carl Thompson

His serious lack of head movement would have aided this I'm sure.

Always great to watch hope he made a few quid because he did things the hard way.

It's his right eye and the loss of vision is partial. Some of the reports announcing his retirement could give the impression he is totally blind in an eye. He suffered a detached retina a few years back and has had a number of operations on the eye since. Unfortunately the treatment has not been able to work sufficiently well for John to safely continue his career as a boxer. I wish him all the best in the future.

Prob good in the long run that his hands been forced to a degree. He could have got hurt if he carried on with that young mans style of fighting.

Wish him all the best in retirement, he was value for money. Always drove me mad with the stationary noggin tho. I take it he's still got his gym.

Seen him live loads of times. Great boxer to watch but as most have said his downfall was his lack of head movement & his predictability.

I enjoyed watching John box; he was a poor mans Julio Cesar Chavez - he earned every one of his wins and every pound he got; when he lost he went out fighting and trying his level best. I hope he enjoys his life and his vision can be rectified.

Loved watching John fight, put his best into everything. Hopefully his gym works out and he finds the contentment that alludes a lot of boxers when they hang up the gloves.

What's going on with Joe Murray, I haven't heard his name in a long time.

He was one of my favourite boxer. Sadly his lack of head movement was his downfall.
His lifestyle outside of the ring wasn't the best as well and it showed against Mitchell. He was a true warrior and gave his all against Brandos Rios.

I was worried for him when I read reports that he was broke after the Frankie Gavin fight was cancelled. From what I can gather, he is now a trainer and is making good money out of this. His last 3 fights did help to bounce back, at least financially.

I wish him all the best in the future.

Still think it's a shame that the Khan fight never materialised for him. I'm not saying he would have won but i think he would definitely have made him work hard and maybe ironed out a few of Khan's flaws. Plus he would have made a few quid

Although he lost, he kind of ended on a high against Crolla. I didn't think he had that type of performance in him. Whilst he didn't win a meaningful fight post Mitchell, he proved me wrong cos I thought he wouldn't be near the same fighter once he knew he could be outstrengthed.

I imagine John has plenty of advice for his brother, Joe.

One of my favorite fighters had a brilliant career, maybe should have gone further but like most of us brits he also liked a drink

he was a great little warrior but to mention him in the same breath as carl Thompson is a slurr on thompsons performances. just my opinion.

Murray v Mitchell was was on the best domestic fights i have seen (i watched it live on tv).

Sad news for Murray, prior to his loss to Mitchell (no shame) he had decent momentum and i suspect that the best Murray probably beats the best Crolla. But life is all about timing and i think the loss to Rios took a great deal out of Murray.

Real tough guy and a one-time domestic monster at lightweight. Good luck to the fella.

One of my Favs was Murray,a real handful for anyone, even had his moments against Mitchell,Rios and Crolla but just couldnt sustain it,lack of head movement proved to matter at the top level and when he declined

I hope he stays in the game and can enjoy more success training fighters

He did manage his cash properly sadly. He sort of blamed Joe Gallagher for it which I don't believe is quite fair to be honest.

For some reason, I read through this whole thread thinking John Simpson had retired, only just realised who everyone was talking about. Must be too early in the morning for me...

But yeah, Murray was in some great fights - the Mitchell fight being the standout - and was always entertaining to watch. Don't think he was ever the same fighter after Rios though.

The fight with an over-sized Rios was epic.....John still absolutely going for it and earning that still comparatively rare thing of complete respect for a British fighter from the US media and fans.

Rios got himself a proper fight that night, one I'll doubt he will ever forget, and to a certain extent John applied the first serious physical and mental dents to Rios who'd been pretty much be smashing his way to the top up until that point. There's a case for saying that John put in the spadework that Alvarado would benefit from.

I hope John has a peaceful and happy retirement.
