Algieri has exuded confidence throughout the promotion of the event, making it clear that he's unfazed by anything that Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach, may say about his skills.

"For one, he is wasting his time because I don't even read those reports. So that's the first thing. Secondly, I hear about them from other people around me and it doesn't make a difference to me. It seems kind of odd for him to be coming out so much and saying so many different things and every day it's a new thing. But like I said, I don't read them and I don't care about them and it doesn't make a difference come fight night," Algieri explained. "I would imagine it is some kind of strategy, a kind of mental game or whatnot. Freddie's been around a long time and maybe this has worked for him in the past but it's not going to work on me."

I'd say it most certainly does. We are talking about it, as others have pointed out.

And I thought Provodnikov beat Algieri. Pacquiao will too. He's significantly better than Rios, but not good enough. That's a hell of a gap anyway.

That's about it. Seems like before every Pacquiao fight there's a "does Freddie really need to do this?" thread. It's not like it's a Toney fight where the guy is flipping tables over and pushing people around, this is Pacquiao. He's about as quiet and polite as you can get. Freddie is just drumming up interest.

Personally I don't see any need for trash talking from Roach other than to try and sell this fight because the public doesn't seem particularly interested in this fight but I think that many people who don't watch this fight will be disappointed that they will miss a great fight.

Sure Algieri doesn't have a big name or big punch but dude can box and take a great shot (he took Provodnikov's best) and he is younger, has a longer jab/reach and is taller plus he showed us he can actually box. I'm not sure if he's good enough to beat a tremendous fighter like Manny Pacquiao but he does have the elements to make it more entertaining than most people think it will be.

Why is it that Freddie is trash talking Algieri (who seems to be a nice, decent person)?

You did?? I know it's your own assessment but I couldn't see anywhere that Ruslan (who I like a lot) won this bout, I felt that Chris got up from the best shots Provo landed in round1 and went on to outbox him. Sure Provo landed the harder shots but the volume of clean shots that CA landed far outweighed the occasional one or two hard shots that Ruslan landed in each round, not to mention Algieri's defense was better at making him miss and then making him pay.

The ring generalship appeared to be owned by RP but Algeiri was able to utilize the entire ring and outmaneuver him and wheel him into the same punches that Provo was trying to set him up for.
