It wasn't a magazine I'd ever seen before. I was in Dudley town centre one saturday. I walked into a magazine shop and saw the cover. All the way from USA.

It was a truly wonderful publication to me at that time. Quite expensive compared with most magazines. But I had to have it.

I must have read it a dozen times. My grandma saw my copy and smiled. "I used to get that for your uncle. He was good boxer [amateur]. You wouldn't be. So don't even think about it. But I'll get the magazine every month for you, if you like?"

Seems like yesterday.

Actually bought, would probably be about June 74. Started buying sports magazines in 1970, and occasionally looked at Ring, but don't believe I bought one till 74.

My uncle gave me all his back issues. I put them in order (I'm a nerd).

This was the oldest one he had.

Hi

I remember 1988 Sugar Ray Leonard on the cover. I think it was the 1988 year review.

Always found KO a little less authoritative. In some ways more fun. Also seemed less international and much more US-centric. Still loved it though.

I seem to remember it being this one below. Although I'd bought my first boxing magazine KO a few years earlier I didn't know much about The Ring and never saw it in the shops. I think I just assumed magazines appeared on shelves randomly and even despite my ordering KO with my local newsagent I probably got about five copies in eighteen months - being very naive, I assumed that as it was from America it must have been really hard to get. Now I realise he was just pretty useless.

The first I can remember reading and I asked my dad did Tyson end Spinks winning streak and he responded. " He ended his career".

Curry was amazing for a time.

The first KO magazines one I got had Harry Arroyo on the cover.

The first The Ring magazine had Michael Olajide on the cover.

That's an amazing picture looking at that, you would defiantly say that Hagler was going to get his ass owned. Brillant :TU:

First boxing magazine I ever bought was the Police Gazette issue that covered the Luther McCarty-Al Palzer fight. Wish I still had that one in mint condition. Bought mostly The Ring when it started coming out, but mostly just read my uncle's copies until they were tatters. Remember they included stuff on pro wrestling there for a while.

You can still pick up the 1970's ones on ebay for 5 bucks each so unlikely to ever be worth much .

Although I own earlier versions now, the first Ring I bought was in 1970.
I recall the cover dramatically asked: Is Heavyweight Urtain for Real???

Apparently, he wasn't.

As an aside, I pedaled nearly 15 miles on my bike to purchase the Bible of Boxing at a magazine stand. None of the stores in my suburb carried Ring. Just like today.

My first was the Ring issue right before Douglas beat Tyson in 1990. After that I would pick up every new Ring, Boxing Illustrated and KO magazine for about 10 years or so. Most were purchased from magazine stands in New York's Penn Station on my frequent trips back to Washington.
Kept me occupied during the 3 1/2 hour train rides. :)
