Where does Quigg go next?

Scott Quigg is currently a shining example of why the WBA need to get rid of the "Regular Champion" belts. For the last year he has defended his belt against poor quality fighters, and his development is being held back. Because he has this lesser title, he isn't pushing himself to take on a bigger name, and is resting on what he has. I fear that this lack of competitive action is going to cost him dearly. Quigg Vs Frampton a year ago would have been seen as a 50/50 fight, but certainly not any more, Frampton is well ahead.

I see similarities between him and Cleverly, both won a belt without having to defeat a champion, in fact Quigg took the belt with a draw. Cleverly fought sub par opposition, and was well out of touch when finally facing a decent opponent. If Quigg does finally get in the ring with a decent fighter, I can see it being one way traffic. Eddie Hearn needs to put him in the ring with Kiko Martinez so we can see how good Quigg really is, that would be a decent barometer. Perhaps a fight with Galahad would also be good, but it wouldn't be of interest to anyone outside of the UK.

I agree. Martinez/Galahad before Santa Cruz/Frampton would be perfect. I like Quigg but he really needs to fight a big name next.

Quigg has never been popular and has a small fan base. He is not a good talker and as a result he doesn't market himself well. Naturally it's the promoter's job to promote a boxer but it works both ways. Quigg needs PR/Media training.

Agree with the OP. I couldn't even be bothered going back to my seat to watch his fight at the weekend instead I had another couple of pints. Knew it would be a boring fight and an easy win for quigg but he must be getting bored himself his not been tested for ages

Whilst coming across as a nice guy he doesnt come across as the sharpest guy out there either which probably doesnt help. Frampton on the other hand comes across as a nice guy but also intelligent with it. Maybe im being harsh and doing Scott a disservice there though i dunno.

He certainly isn't a great talker, but those who are able to do their talking in the ring have no issues. Quigg has been picking up KO's which people love to see, but when it is against some bum that no one has heard of, it makes it pointless.

The way that the whole Matchroom event went on Saturday says a lot about the way they are handling their talent. No World Champion should be opening a show, when most of the audience won't be seated, so what was the point of the McDonnell fight? Get one of your 3-0 young guns to open up. It is great having a show with a load of big names, but no 50/50 fights = boredom. Quigg either needs to change promoter, or get off his arse and try to compete.

Not sure what the odds are of this happening but I'd love to see Quigg/Rigondeaux. Rigondeaux is 34 years old and hasn't had a decent opponent since Donaire. Quigg would be the rightful underdog but I think he's the type who would not be easily discouraged and would try to rough Rigo up and make a good fight.

His promoter might be hesitant to make the fight because Rigo has the potential to make good fighters look bad, but really there's not much to lose. Rigo has an untouchable rep and a loss to him won't hurt a young fighter too much.

Very true, it wouldn't hit him too hard. However, Hearn loves having World champs on his books, regardless of how crap it is. I don't think Quigg would win a round personally, and it would probably be a boring fight, but at least he would get respect for taking it on.

Scott Quigg opponents = an embarrassment

I absolutely agree with you. And I'm glad that you have brought it up, his opponents have been of such a poor quality, that it is embarrassing. Take a moment to look at their current rankings:
Stephane Jamoye is ranked 73rd
Tshifhiwa Munyai is ranked 31st
Diego Oscar Silva is ranked 135th

Those guys were his three previous challengers before last weekend. And surely we can all agree that is exceptionally poor form and that we should be asking for more from our "World Champions".
Batley18 wrote:and his development is being held back. Because he has this lesser title, he isn't pushing himself to take on a bigger name, and is resting on what he has.
I think otherwise. I don't believe that his development is being held back - because I don't believe that he can improve. This version of Scott Quigg is the best that he is ever going to be. I watch the likes of Carl Frampton (who keeps rising to the challenge) and Kid Galahad and I would definitely say that they can further evolve in to better fighters.... Unlike them however, I believe Scott has reached the top of his game, hence the reason that he has been protected.

That said, I do give him big credit for defending against Hidenori Otake last weekend - who was ranked 8th before the fight. At least, we can give him the credit for fighting one top 10 contender thus far anyway.

Excellent point... And it often goes overlooked and unspoken of these days.

Quigg being awarded that belt was the most comical thing that I've ever heard in a long time in this sport. How can a fighter be given a World Title while not actually earning it by defeating his opponent?
And secondly, why was an immediate rematch not ordered to settle the matter?

Don't get me wrong, I do rate Quigg as one of the better Super Bantamweights in the world, but in my estimation he's below Frampton, Santa Cruz and Rigondeaux... And I would hesitate to bet on him beating Martinez.
:shame:

Kiko Martínez has a tune-up fight in bantamweight next month. By the moment we don't know who will be the rival but he wants have a test in this division. A fight with Quigg would be interesting but also a fight with any of bantamweight titleholders.

Frampton! That fight is a natural and needs making now. Now is the perfect time to do it. Get it sorted! They'll both make a packet and it'll be a great scrap

There is a fight next month (Escandon vs Cave), winner is the the mandatory challenger for Quigg...

Does that mean Quigg would have to vacate his current belt in order to fight Frampton?

At the moment Quigg seems to be making a fair bit of money defending his 'Regular Champion' status. So I'd be surprised if he decided to relinquish his title in the short future. He's only had five or six defenses, that's nothing; Hatton defended the WBU title like 20 times before he fought Tszyu... Maybe Quigg will try to go the same route, then take on Rigo.

Plodding along with your world title defences buried in the undercard of what was essentially only a good international-level, cruiserweight clash....sure ain't the answer.

OK, so the little guys often have to pay second fiddle to the bigger boys, but Scott's last defence was not the way to go. A few paragraphs in the nationals after Clev-Bellew, DeGale, Groves and Joshua dominated all the coverage......and you're the defending world champion!

The only way to break this is to get in with Galahad or Frampton. Just demand the fights Scott, you've got a chance and being hidden away beneath Groves/Degale having some tick-overs does not do you any justice.

If we don't call Chagaev a world champion, we shouldn't call Quigg a world champion.
