My young son has been amateur boxing for 4 years now and is only 16.he has won 10 bouts out of 14,I have myself been a 3 time national champion, and have been coaching him myself since the beginning. I see him as a future pro, cos of his style and power, and his height and he on ly weighs 64kg. If he continues to develop the way he is,then turning pro when he is 21is something we will certainly consider. Watch this space,the futures bright!!!

All the best with it. I say work him hard but not too hard. I've not spoken to my old man for over twenty years because of how he beasted me as a kid.

I can't find it but I had a great pic of him from last years finals in Glasgow against a laddie easy double his size lol If i find it i'll post it up, actually incredible.

Hi mate, Conner is a good wee boy and can go as far as he wants too!! But we are realist and have had loads of kids with the talent to turn pro and challenge at the highest level but when they get to a certain age they find woman, drink etc!!

The key for us is to not sicken the kids when they are younger so they are still enjoying it when they reach senior level. I have seen so much good kids that are trained so hard as juniors that they are burned out or just sick of not having anything in their life except boxing!!

We have a few good kids at the gym that if they can stay interested can go on to box internationally and if they want to turn pro.

I have heard lots of stories about dad's training their kids too hard and trying to live their lives through their kids!! This is one thing my dad never tried to do, he pushed us hard but always asked if we were still enjoying it at the same time! Also when any of us thought it was time to get out he never tried to change our minds. I hope you can get back to speaking to your dad because life is too short to hold grudges forever but you know much more than i do of course!

Reminds of what Bernard Dunne was asked by his Dad when he couldn't be arsed getting out of bed to run or was thinking of packing it in, do you want to box? If the answer's no, quit, no point carrying on doing something you don't enjoy, life's too short.

Falling out of love with the sport , my little boy boxes for my amateur club were I coach and own ,if I had it my way he would be going to uni and doing things I didn't achieve in life

Wrong but you can't blame them for trying a little bit, when you hear the stories of the very best in the world they normally got pushed from a very young age, tiger woods and piano players where made to play from 2 or 3 years old, all you can hope is they love it as much as the mum or dad

There's giving a kid opportunity and a push and there's abuse and ruination. For every Tiger Woods there are thousands of bitter, wasted youths who are a bit handy at boxing, football, golf or what have you but have barely got the basics of secondary education.

Agree all parents are barred out of my club , if the kid wants to box he can do it on his own it will make him a better fighter and person

I never ever push him, if he wants to box or not its up to him, he starts uni in september and will join a club nearby, he has already sparred with pros there and defo didnt look out of place, after all his studying the release of 3nights training will also be very beneficial !!

I think it's a good thing having parents involved, depends on the person of course but as two examples where would Calzaghe and Woodhall, be now without their dads giving them a push?

How has he done since your original post - number of bouts / wins etc ?

I don't know how it works in Scotland but student boxing in England seems to be pretty good - able to box for titles and box abroad etc.
