(I know I asked this in the Rourke thread, but I feel it's a legitimate question that warrants discussion.)

And by history maker, I don't mean the fighter to have had the most plastic surgery, or the only Oscar nominated, BAFTA award winning, undefeated pro boxer ever.....

BUT.... Is Mickey the oldest licensed pro boxer ever to win a fight?

Although the thing is on some level a vanity project and a set up, Rourke does look in very good condition for his age I hope other people will use his example to try difficult things regardless of age, in some respects Rourke is a positive example to others.

I agree largely. Fvcked up plastic surgery aside, the man's taken risks, been to the bottom, climbed back up. And being a pro boxer at any level is an achievement, especially when you're in the limelight and many people either are waiting for you to fail or wanting to laugh at you.

He also loves his dogs. That shows a kind and sensitive side.

I don't respect anyone who has had cosmetic surgery.

Was an exhibition... so he broke no records... and far as I know of the record holder for being the oldest man to ever hold a professional license and actually won a professional fight was Saol Mamby. He was 60 years old (2008) in what was his last contest. However, I will note that the oldest fighter in history--- was Walter Edgerton, who kayoed John Henry Johnson, and he was 63 years old. Though I will argue, I feel that Jem Mace was probably the longest active fighter in boxing history, because he fought exhibitions into his 60's and 70's. His career started in the 1840's and he boxed on until the 1890's... Mace was 67 in his last pro contest...

Rourke was a pretty bad pro boxer when he gave it a go last time. His 'opponents ' then we're very carefully chosen. I can only imagine this latest fella had very strict instructions on how to behave.

It's not a great advert for boxing.

Thanks mate. So technically it was an exhibition, not a pro bout? I didn't know that.... I thought it was sanctioned.

Of course he is a hero.I doubt the fight was a fix.Rourke s plastic surgery nightmare detracts from the following truths

A) he was a very decent amateur in the 60s and 70s.
B) he was mentioned in same breath as dean and Brando in 80s he was a character actor.
C) his run in early 90s as a boxer was no mean feat winning all those fights in his early 40s
D) he's crazy tough he challenged a 50 year old Carlos monzon to a spar in prison and got knocked out in a minute.conclusion he's vain but crazy

I don't think his physique is anything special at 64 but he's in shape

Have a closer look, or even try to watch any of his fights from the 90's ... He was worse than bad. 100% celebrity boxer.

Rourke was/is a decent actor. But no doubt he was/is a terrible boxer.

C'mon antonio, those fights weren't world level fights ,they were barroom brawls but u have to give Rourke credit in 1990 he was an a lister still at the peak of his considerable powers and he gave it up more or less (an actors face being his tools of the trade) to fight in the ring.he was 40-43 that was v uncommon than.
