Ive never boxed but there was a boxing gym in the scheme i grew up in which now and again throughout my childhood me and my mates would visit just for something to do,i never really took it seriously and didnt go often but my cousin a few mates had a few fights,funnily enough despite the gym being in the scheme,no-one i really knew ever made a decent amateur career,most people too busy being getting into trouble or playing football

But anyway i was reading an article in the local paper last week where it said Floyd Patterson visited the gym years back

I thought that was great that this legend had been to MY scheme,in Dundee where eff all happens and nobody visits,it was in 1986,i would have been 2 at the time,to think at 1 point i could have been literally yards from Floyd Patterson is mental

Frank Bruno when he was down here in Panto,as you'd imagine both were very accessible

I remember the English team came down. There was David Price, Bellew, Ogogo, Gavin, BJS as I remember.

I remember Ogogo didn't look that good... Gavin looked so natural, so special... Those were the only spars I saw.

Gavin and BJS seemed pals and were mischievous....

Evader Holyfield, Nigel Benn, Frank Bruno, Ricky Hatton... And we're only a new gym in York! Many more will be coming.

Ali came to visit when I was a nipper in Newcastle. Place was packed tho.

I remember it well when floyd paterson came to st francis gym in dundee, I was a young teenager at the time, another American boxing legend jack Johnston once came to dundee im not sure what gyms were around at the time, but it was said he done an exhibition in the caird hall

It was up at Tex`s Gym on the Farm,The Spaniorum in Easter Compton,Jane Couch started training there around the time that I was finishing up with Boxing,it seems like yesterday but actually a long time ago now ....

Nice one Only went there once, but that was to actually interview Jane herself when I was a reporter in Bristol. Had completely forgotten LL trained there. I think I would have been there around 1995... where's the time gone?

Christ...I used to work just round the corner in Dunsinane Industrial Estate....had no idea there was a boxing club in there (think I had discovered booze and birds by the time I was in Dundee, so the charge to be the next Marvin Hagler was on hold).

Nice article though fella, I was a few years too late for Floyd as well sadly.....

You name them they've been there the peacock gym canning town

Small world aye Baboon i work in the dunsinane industrial estate now and still stay right next to it,back then i stayed in 1 of the multis(tower blocks) that overlook it
