Just looking through my old Boxing News and read the article by Matthew Bozeat, he struck me as real kind hearted, but tough sort of guy...

I don't know how he's doing and would be interested to know too. I was a keen supporter of Jennings but Jimmy wasn't himself that night. I know he lost his son in 2006 and the kid may have been already diagnosed at the time of the Jenning's fight (I don't know that to be the case).

Jimmy used to live and train up in Doncaster, he trained at the Tadcaster Arms in Armthorpe. I spoke to John Ruston recently and he speaks highly of Jimmy who took the sport seriously and was a game fighter; he turned pro young and was matched hard. I remember watching Jimmy v Gary Jacobs and the very top men were a bit too much for him, though I saw Gary a few years after and how he got down to welter I do not know. The boxers that trained alongside him speak highly of him. I hope he's doing well now.

Yes, I remember that fight, he got proper robbed that night.

I will never get over that robbery.
This is why some of the recent threads get my goat about "robbery".

Colin Dunne v Martin Jacobs was worst I remember.

Feck off Payne!! I was there it was under par but he still won!!

As for Barnes I remember Vincent pishing it & wazza even going to the corner to urge Barnes on to pull it out the bag & Barnes was flying at that time & a real decent prospect obviously mentally weak & lacks belief now but on his day a real good kid

Great value fighter was Vincent and should have been British champion. His fight with Walker was a corker as was the Barnes fight.

Hope he's doing okay now.

The Board ordered a rematch and still Wazza found a way out of it and set Jimmy up for a fall.

They did,but I think Barnes vacated the title rather than have the fight again.so mike stepped in and we know the rest.

i believe Vincent got a shot at Eamon Magee for the commonwealth Title on a big Warren show.

so the rematch didnt need to happen , shrewd move by wazza

BArnes didnt vacate cause my Brother fought him for title not long after

It was the WBU belt that Vincent ended up fighting for. Warren paid Vincent well to swerve Barnes. It was a big story at the time due to Vincent getting loads of sympathy for having his 'dreams' of being British champion shattered.

Well my recollection is different Hurlock. Being there gives you a perspective, I wouldn't assume a better one than my sofa.

On the flipside, Vincent made the business decision to take the cash rather than go for the title . Unless there is anything else to the story (there may well be) then it isn't like he was shafted; we all knew what was happening.

Looking back, it was probably the first sign that Barnes was never really going to make it. I know he beat Hare later on, but that seemed the rare decent result.

And to think I rated him above Macklin back in the day.

He didn't have a choice.
He was told he was vacating and he wouldn't get a shot at the vacant title.
Play on words - but the Board only ordered a rematch with Barnes.

Really? Well, my bad. Even back in the day I thought Vincent had opted for cash over the title
