Jeff Fenech will be honoured by the World Boxing Council in Las Vegas this weekend as its greatest featherweight of the last 30 years.

Fenech will join other boxing greats including Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Oscar De La Hoya at the annual WBC convention at the Mirage Hotel and Casino where the Australian fought his epic and controversial 12-round draw with Azumah Nelson in 1991.

Fenech will also use the visit to press the case for the boxer he now trains, heavyweight Lucas Browne, to face the winner of the January 17 WBC heavyweight title fight between Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder.

Fenech was a fantastically exciting fighter who put together a great career and I've always wondered how much different his career would have been had he been granted the win in the first Nelson fight. If he'd won that title it would have been something nobody had ever done before and he never seemed to be quite the same fighter after the rip off in Vegas.

His hands gave him hell. I remember all the different things he tried to get them right. But nothing really worked.
