Not sure what kind of involvement Calzaghe will have - he never struck me as somebody who was in love with boxing ?

In your opinion

Good for Joe.....he could just sit back and enjoy his money, do a bit of media work and go on long holidays to Sardinia. I reckon he'll prove to be pretty inspirational, even if it is largely ambassadorial.

Wonder whether Enzo is also part of the package.....they might need to get him to tone down his language a little bit and perhaps be a bit more caring-sharing.

Well it's an Edexcel/Pearson btec in sport which is recognised and respected qualification. Of course it will be funded too as all qualifications for people up to 18.

If this gives kids good access to facilities that they otherwise wouldn't then this is a positive from calzaghe

Also, education is mandatory to 18 now and gives a good vocational option for kids in the area

I think that unless it is a "traineeship" which is 6 months work experience apprentices wages are paid by the employer. Agreed at a very low rate 2.73 an hour, but the employer must pay it.

Yes there are a lot of mickey mouse courses and training programmes and it is annoying to me when employers bleat on about skill shortages (then pay to train someone properly !!!)but overall it is always better when young people are doing something rather than nothing.

That would completely depend. The cost of the actual qualification with Edexcel/Pearson is hard to find as they vary depending on the size of the centre. There is a funding formula out there that takes into account the situation of an area that decides the level of funding allocated to youngsters. A brief summary of this is that if you’re a kid from an area of poverty/deprivation you will get a higher funding rate. The aim of this is to encourage better teaching and better partnerships/resources in these areas to encourage the kids to learn.

The costs involved in delivering qualifications are paying for a lecturer/teacher, a separate assessor, support materials to help learning, online assessment platforms, the actual cost of the qualification from the Awarding Body, supporting administration staff.

The BTECs in Sport being offered are across 3 levels so they will all be different. I would hazard a guess though that the level 1 qual will look at introducing them to the fitness testing, sports development, tactics in sport etc, level 2 will probably go into those topics deeper and then look at other things like nutrition, injuries, planning and level 3 will again take that further looking at building programmes specific to sports, psychology in sport and probably looking at current issues in sport such as doping etc the positives/negatives of it etc.

For the record, the government does not pay the wages of apprentices. The company employing the apprentice pays for their wages and also part funds the qualifications that make up the apprenticeship. This again depends on the type of qualifications. Anyway, the qualifications here are being offered as stand-alone and not part of an apprenticeship from what I can see.

Have opened my own gym myself with my own cash no funding etc in the area I grew up as a kid , have got a few kids working full time on a apprentership What I had to ask people to give them if anyone has any info how I can get these project at my place please let us no , my main aim is a full time educating centre at my gym and give people a chance in life ,,

A company set up 5 years ago to "provide military style fitness programmes in schools" has just received £1m of Government funding - last year they also got another £1m and the year before they got £600k.

There is big money available - if you know how to access it.

I bet this company was set up by a guy who went to the right school and has the right friends etc
They would never dream of giving such grants to an ex boxer

I remember a few years ago I was talking to somebody I know who runs an amateur boxing club and I asked him if he got any Lottery funding.

He said that he couldn't access the funding as at that time (don't know if it has changed) one of the criteria was that you had to own your own premises to qualify.

He was renting an old shop off the council so didn't qualify. Meanwhile, Richmond Rowing Club and their other loaded posh mates just happen to own their own clubhouse and could get all kinds of funding.

There is something badly wrong somewhere.

I can't see military style fitness programmes going well for a lot of kids either, they'll come out with the usual shit about improving attendance and results, but it isn't going to make any real difference, pissing money away.

A lot of money goes to people like that, but you don't have to be well connected to get grants and funding.
