I remember this guy's career and watched his fight with Sammy Goss live on TV, but it's only been very recently that I realized how talented a fighter he was. I'm actually surprised now that he didn't go further, but it was of course a tough era. Still, he had wins early in his career against a young Alfredo Escalera, and Vilomar Fernandez, but what I'll remember most about him is that he should have gotten the decisions against Sammy Goss, Roberto Duran I, and Esteban DeJesus. Really a skilled fighter with great footwork, an incredible chin, a good jab, but lacked a big punch.

Viruet was one of those great boxers of that time that could give anyone a fight, but he just couldnt crack an egg, and very few fighters win proper world titles if they cannot bang a little bit, and of course to be a champ back then you had to be pretty good in the lightweights.

He really had some good boxing skills. You wonder, if he would have got the decision against Duran and DeJesus, then how much more respected he would now be?

He would be much more respected. Look at the love DeJesus gets for beating Duran.

Very good boxer, but what Rosario did to him in their fight was vicious. That Rosario would have been one of the top ten, twenty guys if he stayed like that.
