I love a journeyman's story

I'm a bit conflicted about this. 200 fights is a great achievement but... isn't it cheating to deliberately lose, as Jason is basically saying he did?

It depends how you look at it Gnome. Journeymen didn't create the system, they just operate within it.

'Cheating' is a bit strong but being 'somewhat less than fully committed to winning' is a known and accepted part of the journeyman's role in boxing.

I remember that book, there were quite a few Doncaster guys who you wanted to interview, Dean Wormald, David Jules and there is a real top journeyman from around there who's name escapes but - yep. That would have been a good book indeed.

Twas an era of Snarski, Ramsey, Pete and Nobby's entire gym of course.

Its one of several ideas I have.

I saw Dave Jules this morning, in fact I see him most mornings. If someone wanted to interview him for a chapter in a book he'd be thrilled. If you get around to the book PM me and I'll get his details to you, there are some other Doncaster boxers with good stories to tell as well; let me know and I'll track em down

I think it may be Dean Bramhald you were thinking of, it's Derek Wormald, he's from Lancashire and into northern soul.

No, he's got a couple of gold teeth though. The diamond moniker was because of his ring name 'jules'.

Oh yeah I figured that out but I thought he had a 'jewel' in his tooth as well.

I used to train at the Prince Of Wales and Slick Miller also trained there, he'd not remember me though, others at the gym at the time were Pete Gabbitus, Carl Tilley, John Oxenham, Brett Cuffy, Joel Forbes, John Smith, Kasi Kaihaou. I know Mick Corden was a heavy weight in the late 80's - I used to train at the same gym, Tadcaster Arms in Armthorpe but he lived quite far out and did a fair bit of training in his garage if I remember right.

No, not as far as I know anyway.

My brother and I had a long chat with him a while back, offered to write our own chapters etc. I don't think he was particularly enthused but said sure, write a bit and see what happens.

I asked him a while ago how far he's got as I was genuinely interested the read the rest, given the volume of shared experiences/memories and it was one of those Zenith youth movements I was bang in the middle of. It sounded like he'd got a couple more done but not got much further. I know he's not overly computer literate so dunno if he lost some or what.

I offered to proofread as his rough draft needed some work but he said he'd already got someone to help (some people get offended when you say things like that).

I think the finished article will be fascinating, personally...but possibly if he got a move on, one of the first peer retrospectives out there of that era. There have been books written about "it" but they have almost a scholarly tone, reeling off catalogue numbers and so on, they're not particularly underground. There is one written about Detroit Techno and I've not managed to finish it, I did finish the Jesse Saunders one, however.

The other thing is, if he actually got sound bites/paragraphs/chapters from everyone he mentions, he'd have a much wider view to the book - Ok, so there's a lot of common ground but everyone has a different view of things (life's always different from the other end of the dinner table) and funny stories etc. I think it'd work really well if he did incorporate that into his book. Tell his own story, then weave in everyone else's. I mean, his recounting our first few meetings, I've a funny counterpoint to it - I'm sure a neutral reading it would find it all amusing. The core theme to me, at least, is that we were all in it together and it was just about blagging as much as you could and finding those tunes that others didn't...or trying to be slightly eclectic without losing people. It was just funny watching people going about it in different ways and seeing where it got them.
