By that, I mean, which fighter in which bout won despite taking a shellacking or going through the mill & by sheer will & guts beat his opponent?

Obviously there are many, but which one stands out for you?

I've picked seven random picks, plus a free vote for those don't consider any of my picks to be worthy.

After much consideration, I've voted for Saad Muhammad -v- Lopez 2.

I voted for Moore-Durelle . . .Archie was in his early-mid 40s and facing a beast in Durelle. I think a lot of refs today would've stopped it in the first. Probably the greatest comeback in boxing history.

Benn has certainly got to be right in the mix......written-off well before the first bell had even sounded, such was the G-Man's reputation and the perception that Nigel was perhaps not the force he once was.

The fight was interesting for all sorts of reasons; Benn clearly stunned and hurt by the G-Man's power and speed but it happened so early that Nigel was able to quickly recover and fight back....where he had been suspectible in the past was having effectively gassed himself going for the stoppage, leaving himself too tired to fire back and too open as well.

Neverthless, Benn took some pulverising shots that night, which would have forced other guys to just call it quits and the way he endured this and started rallying himself when he realised he was still there remains epic.

.....buzz is one of archie's biggest boosters.....and i agree with him on this one. hen i watched it on live tv i was afraid the ol' mongoose just had to be losing this one....greatest comeback i've ever seen.

Jake LaMotta vs Laurent Dauthuille

Jake let the man beat the living crap out of him for almost a whole 15 rounds... at the 2:47 mark, LaMotta turns it all around and knocks out his challenger. Was the 1950 Fight of The Year. From what I recall, Jake in later years said he had so much problems making weight for bouts that he played oppossum and conserved what energy he had in him, cus he knew he couldn't fight for fifteen rounds--- so he waited for his opponent to be tired and over confident.

Nah, that was just Jake soakin' it up havin' what he would describe as a "good time." enjoyin' the sport.


Archie wasn't havin' that sort of fun.

Bob Pastor. He got decked 6 times by Turkey Thompson, came back and scored 3 knockdowns of his own and won the decision.

I guess maybe another good one... though was typical in all of his fights.... was Tex Cobb and Earnie Shavers.

Soaking up punishment, only to win on a kayo later.

But, I do think LaMotta fits in there... after all, he did fight Bob Satterfield and got the crap beat out of him, only to come back and knock out Satterfield in the fifth round... and in a sense, the LaMotta/Murphy fights were of the same. Jake lost the first fight, and won the second fight. Both were brutal beatings.

Louis vs Conn 1 has to be a consideration...

Benn! No one gave him a chance before the fight and they were nearly right after the first round! but the warrior, came out that night and Benn showed true grit and determination to beat the G-Man classic fight! Terrible ending but my top 3 fights of all time probably my number one, the fight had everything!

On a much lesser scale,Travis Dickinson stoppng Matty Clarkson earlier on in the year was to be admired and applauded

Fidel Bassa vs Dave "Boy" McCauley....How did Bassa came back after several knockdowns and was probably out and won by KO. What a fight.

Also Juan Martin Coggi vs Eder Gonzalez I

Sean O'Grady vs Shig Fukuyama...O'Grady was bloodied all over and still won the fight.

Samuel Serrano vs Lion Furiyama

Soo Hwan Hong vs Hector Carrasquilla...This was the Archie Moore vs Yvonne Durelle I fight of the history of the 122lbs division. Carrasquilla, 16, of Panama City, Panama, was denied to be the youngest champion in the history of boxing that night. He had the South Korean out cold, putting him in the canvas about 4 times. The fight was in Panama.

This would certainly be a contender if the thread was Which Fighter and Referee climbed the highest mountain. Gonzalez had an ever higher mountain to climb that day.

Two brits I would like to mention would be Lloyd Honeyghan v Don Curry and John H Stracey V Jose Napoles. Both were underdogs, both had to go into the lions den and Stracey had to overcome an early knockdown.

By the same token Carlos Palominos win over Stracey was a shock and Palomino had to fight in front of a hostile crowd. Also Bonecrusher Smith was miles behind when he K'od Frank Bruno.

Also surprised Buster Douglas V Tyson not mentioned as Douglas was a massive outsider and he had to overcome a lot of early pressure.

Marquez getting dropped hard 3 times in the first and getting up and boxing brilliantly - that was class and courage.

Wilfredo Gomez had a torrid time of it with Pintor and got to him in the 14th.

Carl Thompson got a beating from Haye and saw it through and got the win.

At least 3 Gatti fights he came right back from the edge of oblivion to KO or stop the other man; Gatti had balls of steel.

You could say that Marquez really did climb a long steep mountain when you add up all those rounds they fought from three KD's...the losses, and finally the KO.

George Foreman vs Michael moorer... George was 45... Took serious punishment all the way through and came back to ko moorer with one punch. Say whatever you want about George but he was as tough as they come. That will to win.... Miss George fighting...

That's very true.

One could even cite his win over Ron Lyle in '76 too.

He was all but knocked out against Lyle, but still managed to get up & KO Lyle afterwards.
