^Rare film (bad quality) of Jerry Quarry sparring with seldom ever talked about heavyweight Monte Masters in 1983.

Sean O' Grady's brother in law Monte Masters, he married Sean's sister Rosie and fought for his father in law's organization the WAA Boxing Organization. He was that organizations Heavyweight Champion winning the title in a 15 round bout against some non descript opponent.
The WAA was the same Organization and banner that Sean O'Grady fought for after relinquishing his lightweight title for failing to give Claude Noel a title shot.
Lets just say that Jerry Quarry in 1983 way past his prime or anything resembling good fighting form had to take it easy on the WAA Heavyweight Champion Monte Masters. When viewing the sparring session look for Jerry to land a body shot on Masters in which Monte lets out a shriek, Jerry backs off while Masters collects himself and then the sparring resumes. illustrating to me just how much tougher those old school fighters were in comparison to the more recent generations.

I saw this video awhile back. As it is the only footage of Monte Masters (try and even find a photo of him), I was actually surprised mikeycapp, that he was as athletic and competent as he looked in that session. I didn't expect him to even look like a professional fighter to be honest.

Hello Dart 340,
The Monte Masters/Jerry Quarry sparring session is the only video/film that I have seen on Monte Masters not to say that I have done any significant research on locating boxing matches on Masters. I would imagine that Pat O'Grady Sean's father has the title fight between Monte Masters and Tony Fulilangi a 14 Round KO win for Masters. I stand corrected on my previous post where I stated ,"Masters challenger for the WAA Heavyweight Championship was against a non descript opponent" Tony Fulilangi was a popular Heavyweight Opponent during the mid to late 1980's facing such notable Heavyweights as Jimmy Young and Bert Cooper and the come backing George Foreman in 1988 (The Foreman and Cooper fights were televised on the old USA Tuesday Night Fight Broadcasts).
Sean O'Grady's mother (Who only recently passed in late 2014) would record Sean's fights using an 8 Millimeter film recorder at ringside.
You can see highlights of an amateur fight from when he was a child on his Knockout How To Box Video Cassettes and it is easy to tell that the fights were not recorded professionally but rather ringside with an 8 Millimeter Camera.

I posted a photo of Monte from the Daily Oklahoman in his boxrec biography page.
He was an exciting fighter and I used to love to see him go at it!

Also, he originally came from Hartshorne Oklahoma...
And in 1981, he was scheduled to fight the comebacking Joe Frazier... originally Scott LeDoux was to be the opponent, but there was a change in plans... but for whatever reason Masters, too, was pulled out and Joe eventually fought Floyd Cummings.

Reminds me of a movie called "Billy Bob" in which Duane Bobick became the heavyweight champion of the world.

One fool wants a lot of money so now everyone wants the same amount for it.
(BTW Billy Boy was Joe Frazier's nickname growing up on Beaufort island South Carolina).

I never knew Monte Masters existed until I found his name on boxrec several years ago. He was a decent sized fighter at 6'4", 215 and had a good record on paper.. Tony Fulilangi was a hard puncher and unbeaten prospect from Tonga. Master went 14 rounds to beat him. The only footage I ever saw of Monte was the Quarry sparring session a few years back. I suppose Masters was good enough to be a legit professional but his career also appears to have been manufactured by a crafty promoter who's daughter had an interest in him.

Anyone know what the cause of death was for former "world" champion Monte Masters at the young age of 41?

To be honest I think Quarry looks surprisingly spry in that session. Of course he still should have never come back. He took enough clean head shots in the Norton fight alone.

Of the heavyweights mentioned in this thread, Masters died at 41, Quarry and Ledoux died of dementia, and Bobick is in the advanced stages of dementia. Fulilangi admitted he took dives for cash. Its a helluva sport.

Didn't Ledoux die from ALS?

LeDoux was diagnosed with ALS or "Lou Gehrig's Disease" in August 2008. A point of note however is that a 2010 study, see Wikipedia link to, questioned the diagnosis in athletes who'd experienced head trauma or repeated concussions. It suggests some may have a variant of Dementia Pugilistica, known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or Boxer's Syndrome.[9]
Like Ali's Parkinsons its semantics really.....

Anyone interested in knowing what film is out there on Monte Masters, his fight with Luis Acosta from 1982 was filmed.
Promoted by Sylvester Stallone's old promotional outfit Tiger Eye Promotions.

I'm surprised Bobick has dementia from boxing. When Bobick got hurt, he was stopped within seconds. Its the guys like Ali and Quarry who I thought were more suseptible because they hung in there and took so many shots.
