Joseph Parker v Jason Pettaway

Up-and-comer Parker meets West Virginian Pettaway on March 5. Pettaway is 17(10)-1, with the loss being to Magomed Abdusalamov in 2012. He had quite an active 2014, with four fights. His competition (apart from Magomed) has been relatively poor.

Does anyone know much about Pettaway? What do you think of him as an opponent? Apparently he had 130 amateur fights.

Reading his bio on boxrec, he apparently has a barber shop in WV called "Upper Cuts" - just because of that, I wish him well!

The fact Pettaway has had 130 amateur bouts would suggest he knows he was around the ring. His success as an amateur is an unknown? However 17-1-0 as a pro albeit against limited opposition would at least suggest he can throw a punch past his nose! My concern is the ONLY time he stepped it up he was beaten in 4 rounds by Magomed who is a tough opponent for most. Without having seen that fight its hard to tell how competitive Pettaway was up till the point the fight was stopped. So for me hes a bit of an unknown and history will tell you these types can produce a difficult night in the office on occasion.

However having said that im picking Parker inside 6 rounds

Parker is still learning the caper. But he sure is learning fast. I would like to see him have a big fight within the next 12 months or so.

It would be easy to look at Pettaways record - which includes fights against only 5 positive record fighters - and write him off. But having had "apparently" 130 amateur fights in America, this guy would obviously know his way around the ring. As Pettaway hasn't fought past 6 rounds yet, I'll go with a 9th round TKO for Parker.

he took a beating from Abdusalamov but stayed on his feet. very tough
i'd be impressed if Parker continued to show his one-punch ko power

good matchmaking.

this guy is the second best prospect after Joshua

Parker and Joshua look like having a big influence on the future of the division.

This fight is on Thursday night, NZ time. From seeing photos on BS, the size difference isn't great and Pettaway is looking in shape. People seem to be dismissing Pettaway but a 17-1 record is nothing to sniff at, and an amateur pedigree in the US has to be worth more than one in NZ.

I am not saying Pettaway will win but the fight seems to be more than a keep-busy one for Parker and, if I was him, I wouldn't be taking the man from West Virginia lightly.

Its not worth the $39 ppv, the undercard is awful as well. Very disappointing but par for the course with a duco show.

Hopefully Parker can notch up another impressive win anyway.

See what I mean about a shocking show. The polish won in the 2end against a 4 fight novice, 1 fight novice Morgan beat a 19 year old, Blackbourn drew a 6 rounder against an Aussie journeyman and a novelty fight that ended in the 1st. Now its gonna be a 20-30 min wait for Parker. Duco are a disgrace.

Did anyone see the final punch? I heard it was very dodgy, and maybe Parker's camp could be worried about a changed result...
