With such a quiet period on the boxing front, I thought some of you might find this little story amusing.
In 2000 Junior Witter got a surprise chance at Zab Judah's world title on the undercard of the big Tyson v Savarese bill in Glasgow. As Brendan was just starting to wrap Witters hands, Lou Duva, who managed Judah, walked in to oversee the hand-wrapping on behalf of his fighter. Brendan immediately jumped up and shook Duva's hand telling him he was his hero and he was delighted to meet him. Brendan noticed Duva's Hall of Fame ring and asked to see it close up. By this time he'd resumed wrapping Witters hands and he continued in this vein asking about Duva's relationship with Marciano etc etc. After a very friendly and interesting conversation Witters hands were completed just waiting approval from the Board inspector. Suddenly Duva stood up and demanded the presence of the WBC supervisor. Brendan( apparently) and everybody else was in shock -what could be the matter ?? Was it gamesmanship ??
In comes the supervisor and after much debate , the bandages were taken off- and surprise,surprise - Brendan had placed self adhesive elastic bandaging across Witters knuckles before he'd begun wrapping the hands !! Totally contrary to the rules, and to be honest I don't think they'd have made much difference, but what a shrewd old shark Duva was, as was Brendan, but he met his match on this occasion.

Willie Pastrano told a similar story about wily old Archie Moore.

In their ten round draw, Moore was talking to Pastrano from the off - giving him heaps of praise ''oooh, you are a good mover kid, you are the next champion, dance pretty Willie Dance'

On going back to his corner, Angelo Dundee asked Pastrano what Archie was saying to him to which Pastrano replied that Moore was being very nice to him.

'Don't listen him, ya hear' screamed Dundee.

I think it was round 4 - Archie continued the praise 'ooh, you are such a great boxer, you move so fast - stand still'

Pastrano stood still and over came Moores big punch which put Pastrano on the seat of his pants. He got up from it but learned a big lesson that night.

There was a small controversy on line after the Porter fight when Dom was accused of something similar with Brook came to nothing.

Nobody calls Margarito 'shrewd' or 'wily'.

Lighten up chaps, this was nothing like the circumstances with Margarito, his hand wraps had apparently resembled lumps of plaster of Paris. The covering on Witters hands were more related to hand protection than anything to do with punching harder.

Same thing really. I've certainly felt the difference!

Witter's performance that night was the ultimate in hand protection. Ingle might as well have stretched a couple of Durex over his gloves.
