I would dispute Mayweather vs Gatti on the basis Gatti was not a top opponent at that point in time, merely a name.

I would dispute nas vs Barrera, as i think MAB won in a clear fashion without owning Nas in quite the same way that Khan did Alexander.

:TU: Or Ward vs anyone, i remember before the Super 6 Tournament started,Boxing Monthly gave a low down on all fighters,i hadnt really heard of Ward going into it but i knew he won gold at the 2004 Olympics and seemingly hadnt lost a fight since he was about 12,i still thought Froch or Kessler were gonna win but as soon as i seen how easy Ward dealt with Kessler,i knew he was a bit special

Its a pity Dirrell pulled out of the tourney and the Ward fight because it would have been interesting to see how Ward dealt with him,Dirrell's different to what he'd faced and TBH i cant really remember Ward fighting a "boxer".......Dawson maybe?

Barrera was outstanding against Nas it was an absolute pasting.

And Gatti was the light welterweight champion when he faced Floyd, past his best or not to say he wasn't a top opponent when he was champion is nonsense.

Totally agree mate, he blew me away with those performances! Gutted he is so inactive now, such a waste. Yeah Dawson is probably the closest to it, he hasn't really fought anybody that is a "Slick Boxer". I still think he wipes the floor with anyone he faces though.

Would have loved to have seen him against Direll.

Barrera was outstanding, but he didn't make Nas his B*tch the way Amir did with Alexander. Nas still won 2 or 3 rounds which is alot beter than the whitewash Alexander suffered on most peoples cards (1 round at best)

I stand by my opinion on Gatti. How many people considered it 50/50 at the time?

Domination of circumstance but a domination none the less.

Shane Moseley vs Antonio Margarito definitely merits a mention on this thread.

Barrera still dominated a top opponent which was the title of this post, not "Who made who their bitch like Amir did with Alexander."

Same goes for Floyd against Gatti. To say the current champion is not a top contender... come on :o :o :o

Didn't help that Pavlik was stupid enough to agree to fight at a catch weight of 170 which was 10 pounds above his best weight of 160 .

Fair enough on Barrera, i will concede.

Top opponent and top contender are very differing things. Alex LEpai was a top contender by all accounts for Wladimirs title, was he a top opponent?

Was Gatti realistically top 5 at the time of the fight?

I know there was Tszyu, Hatton, Mitchell who would have beaten Gatti with ease(though the a Hatton vs Gatti fight would have been a war.)

No way was he number 1 contender, there were too many guys around who would have beaten him at the time. Nobody thought he was close to Tszyu at all. Mayweather had already fought at the weight as well by the time he fought Gatti. As far as I rememebr Gatti was looked at as the weakest of the champions.

What are you trying to tell me Wikipedia is wrong :OhYes:

Nah ive only seen the fight in replay,i wasnt into boxing back then like i am now, so you could be right in regards to Gatti's standing at the time but looking back on Mayweather's performances, the Gatti fight probably gets talked of more than most when it comes to people talking about Floyd at his best

Gatti was a 3.5 - 1 betting underdog. The betting public expected him to be dominated, and he was.

Floyd had fought Castillo twice at that point, from that perspective gatti was a massive step backwards at that point.

Also worth noting that Kostya was stripped of the title Gatti held at the weight.

in the year end ranking Arturo was seen as the 7th best light welter by Ring Magazine. maybe I'm being slightly harsh but there would be people lower on that list than him i would have considered favourites at that time.

I agree, he is rated as the number one contender at the end of 2004 somehow but I see him losing to a few guys who rated below him at the time and certainly in mid 2005.

Gatti might not have been THE top opponent but he was a top opponent none the less, the opening poster never really said the dominated fighter had to be No1,he used Alexander as his pick and he just got dominated by Porter

Gatti was dominated
