I'm a little jaded towards Hagler v Hearns now too.

Not fights that were colossal disappointments; fights that others proclaimed were great but you thought were not all that.

For me the biggie is Chacon-Limon IV. Many talk about it as being among the greatest fights ever. IMO it was a great fight but not even in the running for top 20 ever; too one-sided for my tastes. Despite the knockdowns Chacon is in control through most of the bout. There are a lot more dramatic action fights I've seen.

Agree that Hagler-Hearns has gotten over-rated as a fight overall, but the first round is still clearly one of the greatest rounds ever.

Ali-Foreman

Brilliant performance by Ali. Terrible performance by Foreman. And very one-sided.

But I can see that at the time the drama would have been amazing.

Larry Holmes vs Butterbean.

Holmes-Norton: Holmes controlled most of the fight convincingly outside of a handful of rounds. Not the war its reputed to be.

Though a masterful piece of boxing... not sure it lived to the hype... was Hagler and Duran

It was one sided for the first third of the fight but starting around round 7 the momentum swung back and forth.

I agree that the Thrilla is overrated but the FOTC has to be the greatest HW fight in history.

This is still one of my favorite fights

Carlos Monzon-Nino Benvenuti 1 was a horrible bore. Not what one would expect from The Ring FOTY.

i always thought that benitez-leonard was
boring because benitez never put anything
behind his punches. never seen a fighter
doing that in such extreme way. it was the
first benitez bout i saw and unfortunately
it really spoiled my opinion about this great
fighter.

someone mentioned ali-foreman and i agree.
despite being a great win for muhammad, it
was a bad fight, because george chose to
fight the worst strategy in boxing history.

It certainly had all the drama and electricty a fight could want... don't know about the greatest HW fight ever though.

Films have only been around since Corbett boxed off with a weird looking fellow named Peter Courtney, inside an all black enterior studio that Thomas Edison had constructed... before that is a treasure trove of fights that only exist in newspapers, or in long forgotten memories of people long since dead.

What I would of given to of sat at ringside when Sullivan fought Kilrain, or when Dan Donnelly fought George Cooper in front of 30,000 plus down Belcher's Hollow and the shouts and cheers could be heard from ten miles away, or in the Coliseum and seeing arguably the greatest Roman athlete in history the Boxer of Quirinal winning his 1,500th bout... whose to say what is the greatest match of all time? And I am sure if all of us were immortal and had our say, am sure Jack Dempsey would of disagreed and said his bout with Firpo or Willard was. Or maybe Jack Johnson would have taken acception, and pointed out how he was just so great he made great men look ordinary. Etc etc etc.

I think it is hard sometimes to see these fights out of context and not get all the drama that went on around them. The Ali/Foreman fight was incredible with everything going on that made the fight an "event" and amazsing as the drama unfolded.

But context, and often a fight being live just makes all the difference.

I agree, I thought Ali/Foreman was a great fight myself. Its more down to Ali's performance against the odds than Foreman though, who I concede fought worse than an amateur.
