I would like to go to a boxing show in Devon or Cornwall but there are no boxing shows on here. I thought it would be a big boxing enviroment here but I am quite upset about it. I think in the north of the UK are more boxers, gyms, events... aren't it?

Maybe I am wrong. Confirm me or not please.

Somebody told me it was a show in Totnes(a hippie town in England), but I didn't see any annoucement.

It's any british high quality proffesional or amateur boxer in Devon or Cornwall? I know in Plymouth is a good proffesional boxer called Chris Adaway, but it's anyone else?

Any Devonian or Cornish boxing fan please, answer me.

He is a Pro, a lovely fella... Don't know of any Quality Pro's from there tho...

Jamie Speight is from newton abbot just up the road from me in devon. Has won a couple of southern area titles and his last fight was a british title super bantamweight elimintor, although he lost. There was a couple of shows at the riveria centre in Torquay which Speight headlined I think, with a couple of other local boxers and there has been a couple of shows down in plymouth recently that I saw on the internet.

Apart from that its pretty non existant. The biggest name over the years has got to be Scott Dann from Plymouth who won a british title, I think a bad accident may have forced him to retire. He had a couple of big shows on at Plymouth Pavilions, this is going back a few years though.

I may be wrong completly but thats my answer lol.

Nigel Christian used to have a stable on journeymen down there

I went to a show in the Plymouth Pavilions which Adrian Stone topped bit that was about 10 years ago

Slight tangent, but Len Harvey was from Cornwall, one of Britain's best and most underrated fighters ever.

I know Jamie and the boy from Exeter-Lewis Browning have exchanged insults-so that might make a good headliner at Exeter University or the Riviera Centre.

Feck all down here and I live in one of the towns with the richest boxing history in the UK as good old Bob Fitzsimmons was born right here in my little town, a mate lives in the cottage that he was born in, has one of the blue plaques above the door.

Anyway as said, Scott Dann was about as notable as it gets. A mate of mine Sam Smart had a couple pro fights about four years ago and a couple other lads have had a couple pro bouts but the scene is literally non existent here. However, kickboxing is totally alive! Penzance is home to one of the greatest female kickboxers of the last 20 years, Julie Kitchen who won I believe 12 world titles, including the WBC Welterweight Title in the sport.

I'm originally from Cornwall. Nothing down there at all. I really wanted to box as a kid but it is just not a sport that exists. Like others have Said Scott Dan was the only notable fighter.

Better take up Karate mate cause that's the closest you will get

The Camborne and Redruth amateur club used to produce some cracking boxers in the 90`s,not sure if that`s still the case nowadays though

There are several good amateur clubs in Devon, but just not really a pro scene. There is quite a thriving white coller/unlicensed scene. But I am an ex devon boxer and I repped England, and I know may others who have from Cornwall and Devon, so no it isnt the Kronk but it isnt that bad for amateurs here.

Not the case ever imo and I boxed for them for a few years although my old trainer there beat Terry marsh in the amateurs

I lived in Newton Abbot for six months some months ago and tried to find a boxing gym. People from the town told me it was a boxing gym in the town years ago, but nowadays there are few amateur boxers that go to Torquay to train.

There are few professional boxers and they sometimes fight in Plymouth or in Torquay Riviera. In Plymouth there is a boxing gym also, but the proffesional boxing scene is quite inexistent.

Sadly wrong. There is a club in Newton Abbot which is run on the old rugby ground, training Tuesday and Thursday. This is where many of the white collar boxers train and where if you look at the photographs thread on the off topic site you will see eddieshredder has posted several pics of boxers training there.

There is within a 15 mile radius two clubs in Torquay, one in Paignton and one in Exeter in addition to this club. There is also a kick boxing club in starcross.

So stick that up you basque country and smoke it.

Chris has been matched tough so far, his next fight is in Trowbridge on 31st January.

Lots of top fighters from Plymouth in the lighter weight classes (particularly flyweight) before the war.

Sokolowski fights out of North Devon in fact he trains in Glenn Adair's garage!



Might be worth contacting his manager Nigel Christian he runs the Cosmo gym in Plymouth along with Glynn Mitchell. I'm sure these guys can point you in direction of some shows or even shows with his own fighters from his gym.

Also have a look at www.kmpromotions.co.uk,Keith Mayo runs shows at the riviera and talk of him doing another down there soon,maybe chance to see some of paddy Fitzpatrick's stable as well.

Yep, I trained there briefly when I was down at Cornwall College doing a course in 1993, and while they were a friendly bunch the quality wasn't high. Toby, was the trainer a guy called Nigel? Would have been around mid-40s then at a guess?

Well those people were wrong.

A couple of pros have come from Bideford boxing club, John Van Emmenis and Rob Palmer, Richie Wenton also trained with them in the past. The lads down here find it very hard, lack of big venues and shows, so boxing on the road which is very hard to win. Tommy Langford was from the Gym moved to Birmingham, and boxes out of there now and doing very well.
