Aus boxers son, I request some help pls

Wow! I'm currently speechless, I stumbled across this forum browsing the Web and it's stirred something inside of me that I would like to ask some assistance with please.

Please read my story: I will try it LONG WIND IT!
Allow me to introduce myself, my me is Kane nelson. Son of indigenous elder and beautiful man Brien "Joe" (after smoking Joe fraser) Nelson, my dad was born and bred in Shepparton. As many young indigenous youth there at he time dad roamed free, he began boxing when taken in by who dad told me was one of the classic trainers of his time.

My father was not only related to, but lived and grew up with legends of the indigenous boxing era, names like-
Lionel rose, Tony mundine, bomber roach, spook aitkinson are but a few I remember my father vividly speaking of. Hey where his family, friends and men dad personally knew, stayed and lived with over the years. Dad told me how they would all at different times car pool to get to events like the boxing tents (which they fought at religiously on weekends), the prior forum post of AUS BOXERS OF THE PAST has really touched a place in my heart as I read through it. For many years when I was 17-18 years old I wrote to channel 7 by hand every weekend for years, I was asking for footage (paid copies) or any information to help me find a way to get hold of it and I never ever got a response..... :oo

Anyhow from what I was told by dad, my mother and many friends of his dad was an exceptionally talented boxer. He boxed the opening night of TV RINGSIDE on its very first live broadcast, eventually he was also selected for the Rome Olympics.
My dad's career never ever got to where it possibly could have as my mother was pregnant then fell very ill right before Rome and my dad withdrew to which he then retired!

THE MORAL OF MY STORY BEGINS:
The moral of my story is for many years afterwards dad floated around Shepparton and left cupboards full of trophies, sachets and medallions with is grandmother. She past away when he was in central Australia (rabbit trapping) working what was the first installation of the rabbit proof fence. On his return every single boxing memorabilia was gone, dad had given my grandfather 2 of his early trophies which was all we retained after that day. :verysad:

After a lengthy public service career my father is now a very ill man, dementia and alzhiemers set in randomly one weekend and my dad is now more equivalent to a bed ridden child in his mannerisms.
Although dad may never see them nor know I fulfilled the promise I made to him to retrieve items/footage of his career I still need to try, I would like to ask if anyone could help point me in the right direction?
TV RINGSIDE fights, lost items or simply any information would be open heartedly appreciated.

I noticed many people, with lots of similar great memories of our unsung boxing heros! I commend Those of you who shared the info, these stories/memories are priceless. Possibly someone may remember him? Or have footage of a night he fought?

One of dad's biggest boasting tales was when he fought his weight division TV RINGSIDE and won, on entering the change rooms dad could hear stirring in the corridors, then into rooms. His trainer appeared to which dad said " what's the racket? What's going on?" his trainer responded, well Joe there's no-one to fight the next division son! The guy hasn't shown, in confidence dad said "but I can right?". His trainer quickly remarked, Joe he's almost 2 stone heavier, then chuckled and began re-wrapping his hands"

From what I'm told dad won that fight also and was mentioned on the night as the first fighter in 40-50 years who had fought 2 weight divisions in the one night and won them both.

My apologies I am now rambling, I just have such tearful memories of dad's face when he spoke of those days and how his whole aura lit up when he did so. The saddest part is he never had anything to show for it, nor is there anywhere I am able to find these kind of stories, photos, footage of just one of these type of great men who I personally believe where part of the backbone of Australian boxing when it began.

Thankyou all for listening to my story, I appreciate the time and tears this has bought me once again.
Kind regards

Kane

He said that he was selected for Rome but then retired. So he must have been amateur so wouldn't be on Boxrec. Good luck finding something mate.

And then he said his old man fought on 'Ringside' which means he must have turned pro, be interested to know more about him. :TU:

id be interested in knowing more too Fat Git :TU:

Thx for sharing your story Kane, sad to hear about your father's memorabilia. He certainly kept some good company though by the sounds of it :D

There are a few round here that really know their stuff in regards to the old timers, it can be a little slow in this section of the forum, so give it a little time and i hope you can find the info you're after

Any little tidbits you can add to fill in the gaps would be great. The Rome Olympics were in 1960, among others the boxing squad included Rocky Gatterlari and Tony Madigan. TV Ringside didnt start until the mid 60s i think?

any chance you could recall any of his opponents?....any chance he fought under another name?... there is a Bob Nelson listed on boxrec who had a handful in the late 50s/early 60s...

Their is a you-tube channel by a guy called Omar Santo Cruz Calderon which specialises in old fights failing that you can try a forum called yuku(which is nearly dead I think). But used to have a lot of boxing historians post there I will start a thread there see if anyone can help you out. :TU:

They fought amateur on TV Ringside as well. My uncle fought Johnny Frog on ringside and he never went pro. He said he was selected for Rome but retired so had to be amateur. Hope he does fill us in on it.

He said he packed in the amateur game on the eve of the Rome olympics so even if ringside had the odd amateur bout - Kane's dad didn't box on ringside unless he later turned pro and that bit of the story is missing. :TU:

Pete,
I fought on TVRingside 1970-1973 ( 30 times +). I do not know exactly the night TV Ringside began, but i did watch it ! Probably about 1968-9. I do not recall a Brien Nelson fighting in my time on TVRingside. TVRingside was presented live at Channel 7 Studios at Dorcas street, Sth.Melbourne from about 1968-9, and then it moved to Festival Hall, and finished there, late, 1973.

I checked Boxrec to try and assist in gaining some info, but the name Brien (or "Joe") Nelson, does not bring anyone up from Australia at that time.. This might be because this fellow did not use his birth name Brien Nelson, and might have fought under another name, or it might not be there if he fought as an amateur on a TVRingside night. ( I recollect vividly, that many fighters, especially those who fought pro in the prelims, often changed their names, for a very wide variety of different reasons. )

To conduct further research, so as to assist this fellow, his dad's fighting name would be valuable, or the date of his fight. There are a few other ways to apply some research, perhaps his son might have been told the names of one of, or the two fighters who fought in the main event that night, or he might have been told the bloke that his dad fought or beat etc. Also, stating his dad's fighting weight would help. Just reading this fellows story again, it seems though, that his dad must have been an amateur, fighting on TVRingside, so this is more difficult to find....and you wont find amateurs on Boxrec.

My library of numerous "Fighter" Magazines from that time, is currently out on loan to a friend (who I have told to bring them back to me) ....and as I have found in the past, researching Fighter magz from that time, often brings up prelim fighters' names and often the amateur prelim competitors.

ps: It isn't that hard to do the research of TVRingside fight nights....they were always on a Monday night. On the Boxrec search engine, you can type in any date, and scroll down and see who fought in Melbourne on any night.....so go to Boxrec, find a popular night back in the past, of TVRingside, and work backwards to you find the first time it was ever held.....remember, as you go backwards, it will change from TV Ringside at Festival Hall to TV Ringside at HSV7 Studio, Dorcas Street, Sth. Melbourne..

When TV Ringside moved to Festival Hall, it used to hold amateur bouts prior to the professional fights....these amateur fights will not be on Boxrec, because boxrec is a professional history of fighters and fights.....but often, these Amateur fights were listed in the Fighter Magazines. Another resource is: The Herald Sun records, look up the sporting section on the Tuesday following the TVRingside fight night, might show his dad's name.

Anyway, I will report back on here again if i find something worthy of mention in my fighter magz, if I ever get them back.... Cheers, grinna.

Good luck Kane :TU:

I was looking into the monday night cards yesterday. Have no idea if this is the first TV Ringside, but its the first i came across at Channel 7 Melbourne.... it listed one 3 rounder.... there was surely more bouts that night... maybe it's a place to start.... once again good luck mate...

If selected for Rome, surely must have been in Aussie amateur championships, and therefore in record books somewhere. If the same as UK he would have won regional and national amateur champs, and those records exist somewhere.

It would also have been new in local papers. In the UK an amatuer winning a national title makes the local papers, so I am sure a local boy being selected for the games would also make local news. Many of our regional and small town papers have digitized archives that are easily searchable.

Is there an Australian Amateur Association? they must have records. This would seem the most sensible starting place.

I couldnt find a Nelson here.

Here is the Olympic team of 196o

http://www.sports-reference.com/olympic ... /1960/BOX/

You can see that most of the reps were national champs in 1959 or 60, but in some cases they werent. Which meant box offs etc, which meant records, and which would have have made local news.

There is a club in Shepparton and it may be that someone from that club has kept newspaper cuttings etc from that time.

20/1/ 2017 Brian Croker BoxRec
(Froggy Croaker) Boxing no 143875.
First and foremost I would like to thank & Acknowledge BoxRec for having such a great database for us old blokes from all over the world (Aust) to scrounge through and deliver information we had forgotten or didn’t know about ourselves.
I hope that my input & research may help BoxRec with more information for their data and help other old Aussies uncover info and pass it on.
My interest in TV Ringside was how I found BoxRec, looking for my records of 4 pro fights in the late 1960’s. 3 wins and a draw.
I located 2 of my 4 fights. After finding how festival Hall had spelt my name.

The Melbourne Australia fights were held at festival Hall W/Melbourne for years. Then TV station HSV7 started TV Ringside airing on a Monday night. They later joined forces and TV ringside came out of Festival Hall. And I remember that we were paid $18 for a 3 rounder and if we got on to the TV we got $35. I earned 2 x $18 & 2 x $35 wow $106.
I told my girl friend now wife of 45 years that I would fight to get the money for a Victa lawn mower they cost $99.

What I have researched TV Ringside started in 1966 or 1967 and ran to 1975.
There would be very little footage remaining because, all TV went to tapes and were continually used “taped over” before Video. The first videotape recording of TV ringside was done by Hector Crawford of Monday 17th August 1970.
(HSV7 videotape recording You Tube).
Now this is where history becomes blurred. BoxRec shows there were 7 fights that night, which is right for TV ringside but not for the venue Festival Hall. As shown above $18 & $35 for 3 rounder on or off TV.
If you listen to Ron Casey “ringmaster” he tells us there had already been 7 fights before they came to air. So straight away there are 14 fighters not listed as fighting??
So when I started to research BoxRec dates of 1969 & 70 I found fight nights sometimes on both Monday and Friday. And many nights showed as few as 2 or 3 fights, when there was a dozen or more fights.
So there must be hundreds of fights not recorded, not recorded in Melbourne.
This explains why families can’t find blokes they know had been fighters.
This research may also help a forum caller Kane Nelson re Brien Nelson TV ringside regarding re using the tape, “taping over”.

This is not BoxRec’s fault, it is Australia’s fault. Is there more records held somewhere in Melbourne?
While I was checking thru all the Monday & Friday fights for 69 & 70, I noticed also if I punched in a name of a fighter out of the gym I was at “Billy Russell” real name (Russell Horsbourgh) they don’t come up, Des Boag, yet I found he fought on 19th/9/1969, also on 1/9/1969 I found Des Voag, both same bloke?, super welterweights. Wrong spelling?
I haven’t seen Des in over 40 odd years. Real name “Des Jamieson” so I don’t know for sure if this is him; also I think he had about 7 fights.
Also I think our trainer Billy Russell won the trainer of the year that year”69”, as we were all winning our fights.
In closing I hope this is helpful and I will update the forum with anything else I find.
Regards
Frog.

The solution to your problem is simply resolved all you need to do is go to the library and look in the Melbourne newspaper "The Sun" and you will find the results in the following days' paper. Hope that helps you regards Matt
