Injuries in boxing - were there fewer before?

I may be just forgetful, but there seem to be so many pull puts because of injuries than say the 1990s and 1980s? And I bet in the 1950s there were way fewer.
It almost seems that every fight has a 50% chance of being cancelled because of injury (90% if your name's David :-))
Am I just being nostalgic and dreaming? If not, why are there so many pull outs? Are modern training high intensity work outs the cause?
What are poster's thoughts?
