An October showdown between Felix Trinidad and Ricardo Mayorga at Madison Square Garden has been officially announced by promoter Don King.
Puerto Rico's Trinidad and Nicaragua's Mayorga will be contesting the WBA international middleweight title.

"No matter what you do, Tito, you are a loser and you're gong to fail," said Mayorga at a New York news conference.

The 2 October fight will be Trinidad's first since the announcement of his retirement in July 2002.

King referred to the 31-year-old Trinidad as "my shining star" and said he brings "honour and class to the sport of boxing".

Mayorga, unable to attend Monday's news conference because of legal trouble in Nicaragua, joined in proceedings via a live phone link.

And Trinidad told him: "You have never fought a fighter with my punching power and when you face me you will see that no one has hit you the way I am going to hit you."

I see this website has Ricky Hatton down to fight on the same night. Coincidence or is something afoot?

Good to see MSG staging the big fights again. Despite all his out of the ring problems, still think Mayorga will muller Trinidad.

Even in his first fight in years, trinidad will have no trouble with this overrated swinger, who belongs in a barroom.

Ricardo Mayorga will lose badly to Tito. Mayorga is an unskilled swinger with overrated power.

Watch Cory spinks dance a boxing masterclass around him AND get the better of the exchanges when they happens.

Tito will finish him inside 3 one sided brutal rounds.

I am guessing Bennie!!!! Probably being a bit harsh on him but he must have been close to 14stone at his biggest!!!

Mayorga's going to walk through Trinidad. The Puerto Rican needs to squeeze in a warm-up to have any chance. But it looks like he's jumping straight in minus any recent rounds. Boxing suicide.

Highly doubtful.

Mayorga will lose to anyone with decent boxing skills, who has a good plan. He really lost the second forest fight IMO.

This is a matchup between a very average fighter, and a fighter on the borders of all time greatness.

Its a no - contest.

I hear what you are saying Bennie, but Trinidad is the bigger man and a come forward fighter like Mayorga shouldnt be hard to find with those bombs of Tito's.....

I think the first time Trinidad clips Mayorga with that left hook we'll see the "wild man" suddenly reduce the ferocity of his attack in a big way.

Tito might have been out for 2 years but I can't imagine he's forgotten how and when to throw a punch, and it's not like he ever relied on sharp footwork.

Mayorga has never been hit as hard as he's going to be hit on 2nd October.

Actually ignore that. I had "Hatton", "fighting" and "big name" in the same sentance. Silly me.

I was wondering about this one, but I have to go with the better fighter, who is Trinidad by a country mile.

Mayorga is a crude brawler, and he couldn't even make a dent in Corey Spinks. Trinidad will drill the shite out of Mayorga, Tito is a good straight puncher, and his technique is a lot better than the wild Mayorga. Hopkins took ages to break Tito down, Mayorga isn't skilfull enough, unless he gets lucky or Tito is shot to shite, Mayorga loses.

One caveat to this, is of course that Tito gets in shape and gets the correct sparring.

Hatton could fight Peter Buckley and I'd still buy the PPV if it meant we got to see Tito v Mayorga.

Tito-Mayorga is the clash i'm most looking forward to this year! It is a huge risk that Tito is taking in his first fight for over 2 years. I believe Mayorga has the power to hurt him, Tito can't afford to be ring rusty early on.

I think Tito will weather an early storm and come back to stop Mayorga fairly late in a classic. When he gets into a boxing rhythm is will be all Tito.

Another question: if you were managing Trinidad and wanted to choose a big comeback opponent for him, who would you choose out of Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga?

Mayorga, because I think Tito would get pissed all over by Oscar after such a long layoff.

I don't think that any of the guys who decked tito were as wild as Mayorga, who is as wild as the wild man of wonga.

very good question. With hindsight after DLH's poor performance against Sturm....i would say him. I think middleweight suits Tito more than Oscar...when they first fought it was at Welter.

But Mayorga has never fought at 160, no telling what he'll be like. Tito has far superior skills to him as well. If he uses his instincts he should win this fight.

Of course DLH is a bigger money fight, Tito would make at least double he's making here.

It depends how you look at it. If they had that decision now, making the fight for early 05' perhaps....then yes, DLH, but at the time i think they were right to choose Mayorga.

He wont need to, Mayorga is moving UP into the big leagues, and in terms of power, Tito is still king.

As soon as Mayorga tastes a big right hook, he wont keep coming forward, infact, he wont do a lot at all, bar get hurt. Infact i can seriously see this one ending inside the first round.

Tito may have been floored, but he never seemed on the verge of being KO'ed with the exception of Hopkins.

Mayorga is no Hopkins.

Mayorga, the interest and payday for what will turn out to be such an easy fight, makes this the more attractive option.
