I’m not so sure that I approve of the frenzied praise and accolades that Gennady Golovkin is drawing are wholly justified on the back of dominant victories against mid-tier opposition.

It’s not my intention to criticise or attempt to undermine GGG’s feats in any way; it’s just that I feel that he’s been granted an honorary rite of passage leading him to close to the very summit of the mythical pound-for-pound top-ten mountain without having fought the very best.

Golovkin probably is the “real deal” in terms of pedigree, but he hasn’t proven this yet against elite-level opposition… and this is something that I feel he has to do in order to deserve the recognition he’s currently receiving.

In terms of the other elite fighters (i.e. Pacquiao & Mayweather), they’ve been considered “the best” for quite some time now… and if they face each other, you can’t criticise “the best” for facing “the best”, even if they look far less dominant and destructive than those who merely dominate borderline top-ten contenders.

After all, the best opponents on GGG’s resume (Daniel Geale & Matthew Macklin) aren’t fit to carry the jockstraps of Manny or Floyd.

If you’re able to take a leap of faith any “buy” into the idea that a fighter has genuine pedigree merely by looking impressive against moderate level opposition (such as Jorge Luis Gonzalez and Michael Grant, before being destroyed by Riddick Bowe & Lennox Lewis respectively), then that’s your prerogative.

anyway, I've been saying for a while the best p4p fighter on the planet is GGG, most people just don't know it yet. Triple G will knock out Murray, and not much will be said of it.

Hopefully he gets a big fight by the end of the year, perhaps Froch in Vegas. KO the cobra then i think then everyone will sit up and take note.

LOL for you stating "a way past prime Floyd" because everyone here knows that should Pac win you will be the first one here with 1,000 posts stating how great Manny is and how he beat the best in boxing and yadda, yadda, yadda.

Make your case now, is Floyd the best or will Manny have just beaten a "way past his prime Mayweather" and not deserve such high accolades from you should he win??

By the end of the year the #1 guy will be Mayweather, especially when he beats Manny (who isn't way past his prime though he may be out of it).

The only way 3G wins P4P #1 is if he beats Ward, Kovalev has no chance because outside of BHop there just isn't anyone who carries that much weight and if he beats 3G then he'd only be beating a smaller man.

It won’t happen, but if Khan defeats Miguel Cotto next and then emerges victorious by beating the winner of the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, then he’ll almost certainly be regarded as the pound-for-pound number one.
