Looks like joe has blown his chance at the johnson fight, he could be in real trouble now with only amonth till his scheduled date... bring in mr warren and his famous fighter TBC

June 15, 2004; Last week undefeated WBO super middlweight champion Joe Calzaghe pulled out of his anticipated light heavyweight debut, which was scheduled to take place against IBF champion Glen Johnson last Saturday night at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England. Since then, it has been widely reported that plans to reschedule the bout were already underway, however, our reliable sources directly involved with this matter have informed us that Calzaghe's bid to become a light heavyweight champion in his first fight at 175-pounds against the rugged IBF champ seems extremely doubtful. Following his pullout, Calzaghe made some harsh comments that Johnson took exception to. Johnson demanded more money, allegedly upped his offer to Goossen-Tutor Promotions to approximately $600,000 ($400k would have been Johnson's purse) and there's still no fight. As we understand it, Calzaghe will now look to make the fifteenth defense of his WBO super middleweight strap against a B level fighter, while Johnson and his handlers continue their discussions with Team Roy Jones Jr. for a bout that could take place as early as September Considering he has never seen anywhere near the $400,000 that was on the table for the Calzaghe fight, you had to figure something bigger was cooking for Johnson to walk away from that kind of bread so nonchalantly. More to come, but until then remember where you heard it first .

$600,000! And he's walking away! Surley he won't get much more than that for fighting Jones? And if he fights Calzaghe, he has a better chance (But not much IMO) than if he defends against Jones.

Can't say I'm not dissapointed, but it's like Wales said, it's no more than that fat wanker deserves. Unless he finds a decent replacement ( Zsolt Erdei maybe) I can see him having to refund a lot of tickets.

I think Calzaghe is a fool for blowing this, but I don't particually like Johnson either.
I know he has been ripped off plenty of times, but to me, he seems like a bitter, grumpy old fart and winning that IBF title has really done to his head.
People say how likeable he is, but I see nothing likeable about him.

Theres probably a clause in the contract stating Johnson must fight Calzaghe, FW is a clever man so he will do everythink he can to stop jones - johnson happening, we dont want the IBF to be like the WBC

And only a good/very good boxer - certainly not world class.

He was'nt ripped off in the first woods fight though like everyone makes out it as a close fight and a fair result.

I doubt even Fast Frankie Warren could get a world-class fighter (and Johnson is that - make no mistake) to sign a contract where FW's fighter can choose to fight anytime between June and December, depending on when he feels ready. The contract may have been rendered null and void by Calzaghe pulling out, though the fact that FW and Calzaghe were able to get the BBoBC to certify the pullout as being due to injury rules out Johnson suing FW for breach of contract.

There's some real bollocks being talked here.
Of course Johnson's bitter, he's spent his entire career fighting in his opponent's back yard and getting ripped off, and at the age of 35, he doesn't have time to waste whilst fights get rescheduled. At the end of the day, it is Johnson, not Calzaghe who is the belt holder, Calzaghe has only a minor belt, whilst Johnson has a legitimate title belt which he won fair and square.
The first Johnson v Woods fight was a rip-off, I spoke to one of Clinton Woods' mates at the 2nd fight just before the rematch, and he said that Clinton had even admitted in the dressing room afterward that he didn't deserve the draw....
I can totally understand why Johnson wants to just get on with it, and a fight against Jones would more than likely make him a very nice payday. Jones wants a belt so he can try and get parity with Tarver who is striking a hard bargain for a rematch, and it would make their fight a unification battle to boot.
To assert that Johnson isn't world class is doing him a disservice, he's fought a higher level of opposition than Calzaghe, and most of his losses were controversial or close decisions against the best men out there.
I am not saying he's a great fighter, but he is definetly world class, if he isn't, then ask yourself this, what has Calzaghe done to prove he is a GREAT fighter, answer, nothing. He's only fought three good opponents in Eubank, Mitchell and Brewer, and was dropped by Mitchell, and held to points by Brewer. Eubank was past his best and was a late replacement, and for me that remains Calzaghe's best performance.
Calzaghe may yet turn out to be great, but he has yet to prove it, but Johnson has certainly proven himself world class.

Very little on Johnson's record to remotely suggest he is world class and certainly nothing in the way he fights.
