WBO #1 jr lightweight "Mighty Mike" Anchondo will take on #2 ranked Gavin Rees for the interim version of the WBO's 130lb title on July 15 at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas. The world title bout will be the headliner for Golden Boy Promotions' monthly "Oscar De La Hoya Presenta Boxeo De Oro" telecast on HBO Latino. The card, which also features undefeated local favorite Americo Santos (16-0), will be the first ever boxing event to be held at the American Airlines Center.
i wondered what Rees was up to, great news for him. I dont agree that he deserves a shot, he hasn't got any signifianct wins on his record, but seeing any Brit recieving a title (ok WBO but still...) is good news.
Anchondo has a pretty good reputation, and aint bad on 'fight night 2004' either 8)

i dont think he'll be winning. But who knows!?!?!
he was set to fight Gomez at the MEN in April. I think it was a good thing he didn't.

his best win is arguably against Nikolai Eremeev, a tough, game, but limited Fondu fighter.

same here. He looks strong, nothing spectacular, good all rounder. It's crazy how he's got this #1 contendership though.

Interesting, not sure why its an interim title shot - Corrales has only just won the belt. Whats going on with Chico.
Mike Anchando is very good - but Chico would anhilate Rees I'm afraid. So this is probably Gavin's best chance at winning a somewhat meaningful belt (especially if Chico does vacate).

chico is moving up to lightweight to fight Freitas on August 7th. If he wins that, he'll most probably vacate his super feather title, but he could well lose, so yeah, if Rees somehow does beat Anchondo he may have to meet Chico.

Shows how crappy the WBO title is.

I thought that with interim belts, should the champion elect to vacate the title, the interim champion gets the belt. However, it seems that regardless of the situation with Corrales, the Anchando / Rees winner will have to fight again for a vacant title.
Why not call this an eliminator fight. I fear even if Rees does beat Anchando (which I don't think he will) he will probably either face Corrales or Casamayor.
I saw the rematch today (bored) it was a lot closer on second viewing and really Casamayor did have a case, although I JUST edged it to Chico. They have to have a rubber match.
