Right now, I'd put Wilder at #1, Jennings at #2, and probably Cunningham at #3. I don't really put any real distance between Thompson and Cunningham, though. Would almost need to see them fight to be able to call it.

This has to be the weakest HW division in history.

At his best Thompson was barely a top 10 guy a decade ago and while it's great to admire such an eloquent guy, his current status is based on beating a pair of dreadfully weak guys in Price and Solis. He has to be ranked fairly high because of how severely unaccomplished the current crop of HWs are, but not only would I have him behind Wilder, Jennings and Cunningham, but I’m pretty sure he’d lose to Arreola as well.

For those defending the current HW division, just look at how far Fury jumped in the boxrec rankings by beating Hammer, who somehow was in the boxrec top 10 despite having not a single win over a top HW and never looking like anything but a club fighter.

It’s possible some of the top HWs are quite good, but because they seldom take any risks by fighting each other, we’ll probably never know. Each year is like groundhog day in the HW division. A couple of guys buildup undefeated records by fighting weak opposition and then “earn” a Klitschko beating by finally winning against a guy ranked near the bottom of the top 25. And most of them either simply fade into obscurity after their beating, or continue their un-inspired careers with very little enthusiasm like Solis.

Who doesn’t like The Tiger? But let’s be serious here. He wasn’t very good 10 years ago and now he’s back near the top of the division because he beat a fighter who is about 60 pounds overweight and holds his training camps at the food court in a mall.

Charles Martin would grind him down for an inside win as well

Thompson's career has been kind of impressive considering he didn't even turn pro until his late 20s, and he's still (debatably) a top 10 HW at age 43.

I think Wilder probably beats him at this point, but Thompson/Jennings is a 50/50 fight IMO.

Is Tarver still planning on fighting on at HW? If so Thompson/Tarver could be interesting, if a bit slow-paced with their combined age pushing 90.

It's hard to say because I believe Thompson would've beaten Stiverne with just as wide of a decision. Be tough one to call . I'd pick Thompson to beat Jennings though.

I don't know if I would say Tony Thompson is the best American heavyweight... but I garuntee if he fought Wilder, he would not show fear and he would make a fight out of it. And a man like that will ALWAYS be a threat to a man like Wilder.

I would really like to see one of the younger big guys from the USA box Tony Thompson. Gerald Washington, Charles Martin and Dominic Breazeale. None of them may be ready for Thompson yet but it would be fun to watch. I rate Thompson after Wilder, Jennings and Cunningham.

Tony Thompson is probably the most proven of the American Heavyweights out there having fought the likes of Wladimir Klitschko twice (and got KOed twice as a result), Kubrat Pulev (lost on points) and two wins over Odlandier Solis (split and a 8th round stoppage). So you have to consider as him as one of the best American heavies out there. But Deontay Wilder has the belt so I reckon he is there or there abouts.

With the exception of Wilder, that amounts to a pretty woeful list. Deontay is the only thing America has going for it right now, unless Jennings can produce a miracle.
