Floyd Mayweather Sr v Roger Mayweather

I saw an article on Sky Sports News the other day where Freddie Roach was questioning the move to make Floyd Sr as cornerman for the fight. Freddie's rationale is that Sr is a terrible cornerman who can't get his point across coz he's so animated and makes the fight all about himself. I'm not sure exactly how much difference the corner makes on the night but preparations for Hatton v Pac were almost certainly affected by Sr not doing his job well/properly (although the result would have probably been similar).

Just wondered what people thought... is Freddie right, or is 'Money' just that good that you could put Barbara Streisand in his corner and it would make f*** all difference?

Discuss...

Sr's corner work is abysmal, why Hatton ever decided to work with him, or any other fighter for that matter, i will never know. I'd be amazed if his IQ is a higher figure than his age!

Interesting vid on floyds perspective of that training camp. Two sides to every story I suppose. I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Every demolished fighter needs a scapegoat.

I remember when Hatton fought Pacquiao in the aftermath, there were rumours Sr couldn't even do the pads Southpaw, hardly ideal if true and still the case

Hatton confirmed this on the ringside special sky did on him recently. Laughable when you consider the level of fighters he has been training.

Nothing shocks me about Floyd Sr, the mans as bright as a blackout, a walking talking plank of wood.

He can't do them orthodox either, not properly anyway.

I'm not impressed with most Americans trainers if I'm honest, they produce great fighters but a lot of their trainers seem trapped in a Rocky movie trying to gee fighters up with motivational speeches when most of the time a simple insruction will do

don't get me wrong ,the worlds greatest ever trainers are American but today is full of a lot of bluff and bravado, with a lot of corners saying nothing helpful in n the slightest,I love listening to the Liverpool trainer Paul Stevenson,he seems clear in his instructions and takes a lot in in the 3 minutes passed, very astute,Gallagher,Moore,Lockett,McGuigan, Arnie are also great students on the night

There's a time and place for The Field of Dreams or Any Given Sunday

"Go out there and beat this punk"

I had a mate tell me the other week that Sr must be a great trainer because of how good Jr is

All this Hatton crap!! He layed out the law to Hatton & told him he's not there to boil him down & he font want him walking into camp 2st over & Hatton listened & boxed the best ever v Malignaggi & then fell back to old ways & came back heavy to camp against manny where he had brought beard in to help him. Hatton loves an excuse or blames others when it was his fault the dick

Is Floyd shot/fading or is it part to do with the changing of training.... certainly Floyd's best run of form came under Roger.... if ain't broke.

It seems though like Floyd has this magic thing about convincing a fighter he is the best - I never "got" the Oscar and Floyd relationship - for me he regressed, but he constantly sang the praises ditching Roach at the first opportunity.

I remember Floyd Snr used to turn up late all the time when training Hatton. I also remember, after one of his fighters was in less than pristine condition and lacked stamina, him making the comment "That's not my job to make sure he's in shape, that's the conditioner".

Not a fan of Floyd Snr as the lead trainer that's for sure. Roger may be a nutcase, but he's the more consistent trainer. Then again, I'm pretty sure a few years back I read on another forum a lot of crazy stories about Roger's behavior, written by guys who used to train under him.

Aside from Floyd Sr's attributes as a trainer and cornerman, I've always gotten the impression that there is some deep and destructive dynamic going on between him and Floyd Jr. On HBO's excellent 24/7 documentaries, I sometimes felt shocked at the relationship between the two. I very much got the impression that Sr is jealous of Jr and also feels a great deal of resentment toward him. He tries constantly to take credit for Floyd's achievements and to muscle in on camps, even when Roger is running them, as if Floyd Jr owes him some great debt.

I'm not a psychologist, so I don't know anything about the science of close relationships in which one party is jealous of the other, or about father son relationships, but it wouldn't surprise me to discover that Floyd Sr, in some subconscious level, wanted Jr to fail.

Anyway, given the rocky past of their relationship, with numerous thermonuclear bust ups and estrangements, I don't think he's an ideal choice. But a daddy is a daddy, and I wonder if Floyd feels an obligation? Again, bad move.

Beyond that can anyone remind me how many non-Mayweather boxers Mayweathers Roger and Floyd Sr have trained to success? I don’t think he made a big difference to Oscar dela Hoya, who was supremely talented and often looked great, but found a way to lose every big fight he was involved in (I don’t view a roided Vargas as big, as he’d already been ruined by Trinidad). And Hatton was worse, in my view.

What about Roger?

You can’t discount what they’ve done with Floyd, who is probably the best boxer of his generation. In mythical matchups at 147 and below, he is difficult for just about everyone, even if he doesn’t win. He’s got outstanding defence, and is better than anyone today, beyond Hopkins and Marquez at their peaks, at working out opponents and making mid-fight adjustments. So, it would be unfair to discount that. But equally, nor can we discount that they’ve had Floyd (who is genetically talented for boxing, given his lineage) since he was a boy. That makes a huge difference in anything in life: you can’t speak a language like a native (even if you get close through hard work, talent and years of practice) unless you start before the age of 13. Football coaches are constantly reminding us that there are certain skills that, if not learned by 12, never will be learned to the extent that it can be performed naturally.

Until either take more than one man, like Futch, Dundee, D’Amato, and even Roach, I suppose, did and have done to world titles, I’ll be far from sold on their qualities as trainers of the very highest calibre.

Floyd will do what he always does it doesn't matter who is in the corner. Roger does however seem to be the more level headed and calmer coach. I noticed Floyd Snr got up to talk at the presser and Ellerbe ignored him and passed the mike to someone else! Probably a good move! Looking forward to 24/7 to see Floyd and his old man verbal sparring again!

I think Floyd Seniors head is still ringing after the beating he took at the hands of the fighting machine that is Charlie Zelenoff :bag:

On a related note, wasn't Ellerbe sacked? He's back on the scene now?
