Great article on a great guy. He is one of my favourite people and one of, if not the most, remarkable people that I have ever met.My parents were really glad that I joined the Ingle gym, when I moved up from Oxford to start university: they new that I was being well looked after.

On any given day, he would give me as much of his time as would the world cruiserweight champion or the european light-welterweight champion. He new that I was there to keep fit, and wouldn't box and make money from boxing; his interest was simply in helping me become fitter, more confident and ready to get the most out of life. He does that for everyone who comes through the door. Like I say, a remarkable and lovely man.

A good read that - although I have read similar many times before, there were a few new comments/snippets of info.

Really good article. Reading about Brendan always makes me feel bit ashamed of not being as involved with my local community as I should be. Would love to see him in the Hall of Fame whilst he's still around to appreciate it.

D As proud as you can be when a child moves AWAY from Oxford to start university. Give me a Wincobank rendition of 'Red and Yellow' over a Magdalen College lecture on homophones any day!

That is an interesting point that you made, Sklar. I was actually offered a place at Balliol College, Oxford, but I had grown up in Oxford and wanted to see somewhere different and loved my family holidays to the Peak District and Yorkshire*. I was also interested in becoming a town planner (which I am now), and decided that a planning course would take me where I wanted to go, instead of a history degree (which I was also considering).

Incidentally, a couple of my friends studied at Magdalen College -they were choral scholars in the chapel choir, directed by (the then director of music), Bill Ives.It is a lovely place with a beautiful deer park. The college churns out world class musicians and academics, many of whom have had world class schooling before going there. Brendan's gym turns out world champions, many of whom haven't boxed before joining. Is one place better than the other? They both add value and make positvie contributions to the world, I'd say.

As an accompanyment to my time as a student, my parents were pleased, as they felt that the Ingle gym was an interesting and nice place to be, which it is.

* Also my final grades wouldn't have been good enough in the end, as I was an exceptionally lazy teenager. During term time at University, Brendan could sense when I was drifting or coasting along and would ask how I was doing. When I moaned that I was lazy etc, he said "don't worry, at some point you will recognise what you want to do and will get frustrated with yourself, which will be the kick in the pants that you need to focus your mind". He was right.

Lovely article, but wasn't aware that Brendan has dementia.... hope he/the family consented to that information being made public.

Everybody in boxing in Sheffield has been aware of Brendans condition for a while now.
If Brendan's gone public good on him.
I've never met anyone like Brendan in my life.
He has an aura I can't explain.
What he has done for countless individuals cannot be summarised.
It's not just about the Champs it's about every kid who's passed through the doors and learnt life skills honesty and integrity.
Admittedly some have failed but many have achieved.
Bendan Ingle I salute you Sir.
