Miguel Cotto vs Daniel Geale

Seeing discussions this might end up being the go to fight for Miguel. I think this might be the best opponent I've heard mentioned with Miguel that seems realistically makeable for June in months. Hope it happens.

If one forgets that Cotto is a lineal MW champ, then that would be a good fight. However taking on Geale instead of the man who stopped him is just pure ducking.

... yes, he got the fight, because Team Cotto didn't want to talk with Loefler. Golovkin is not a big enough name for Cotto, but K9, Heiland and Geale are. What a joke Cotto made of himself

A 4 division champ a joke?? How many divisions has GGG had titles in ??? I do not he wants any of GGG but hes taking advantage of the multiple belts. Geale or Heiland r good defenses. While he waits on Floyd/Pacman or a bigger offer for Canelo.

Why are we talking about ancient history. Cotto hasn't performed well above WW.

Exactly so why demand a fight......he took advantage of multiple titles and grabbed one. Title mean jack shit nowadays.

Then he needed to drop that belt and go back to a weight class he belongs to. Now he acquired reputation of a ducker.

Perfectly acceptable fight for Cotto.
Miguel has had all of one fight above the junior-middleweight limit and that was against a guy that was 39-years-old with failing legs.
Geale is not a big puncher but he's not falling apart and is a true middleweight.
Taking a fight with Geale will let the Cotto camp know if Miguel can handle a real middleweight.
If Cotto proves he can handle a real middleweight then go for GGG and if it turns out Geale is too much for Cotto then he never belonged in the ring with GGG anyway.

LOL why does he gotta drop the belt? You act like a belt means you're the #1 guy or something in 2015. Divisions are littered with corrupt abc belts. GGG & Miguel are the top two guys, but it ain't really got sh!t to do with belts they hold.
Maybe they fight eventually, maybe they don't. The reality is there is more money out there for Miguel to fight Saul right now, so GGG needs to wait in line or keep enhancing his rep til it makes sense to fight him.

Maybe if Cotto had made the move up to '60 when he was a bit less long in the tooth, he'd have been more willing to take on the very best in the weight class. But at this point? I sincerely doubt whether he or his people have ANY inclination whatsoever to climb into the ring with GGG. Because they know that it would very likely be a career ending fight for him. So, until they've exhausted all the other opportunities that they want to take advantage of ( ESPECIALLY a Canelo bout ) for the most amount of money available, then & ONLY then , will Cotto consider GGG as an opponent in one last cash grab to pad his retirement coffers.

I really hope this gets made and would slightly favour Geale for the win.

monroe would definitely take money to step aside.
anyone would take free money not to fight golovkin rather than fight him.
this idea that cotto is just going to bide his time with that belt until he
gets a floyd rematch or canelo fight is laughable. he had his shot at
canelo and blew it. WBC already announced that GGG is cotto's mandatory
after cotto's one voluntary, and cotto is now choosing to use that voluntary
against geale, hypothetically possibly after a string of other random names
thrown out. let's just end the charade, pay monroe step aside money, and
get cotto's mandatory defence againt GGG done now. cotto-geale makes
no sense when GGG is right there. who would prefer watching cotto-geale
over cotto-GGG? for the life of me i don't understand you people blabbing
all day every day about how titles mean nothing, and then turn around and
argue that cotto shouldn't vacate his title, but defend it against geale rather
than GGG. you people are the reason why the titles are a joke. if the WBC
said to cotto, stop screwing around and fight GGG, they would be doing what
a title is supposed to do.

If Geale wins that makes him the lineal champ... Whats he gonna do fight GGG again?

Golovkin has a fight because Cotto is never going to fight him. Guys, I like Miguel Cotto, I really do, and I rationally understand why he's not going to fight GGG, but really, he isn't. You all better hope he signs with HBO to take on Canelo in the Fall, because otherwise Golovkin is definitely going to run out of bodies in the middleweight division to beat on. Canelo, it seems, is at least willing to test his mettle against anyone.
Geale isn't a terrible opponent, and my first thought was "Geale should win". Geale has a substantial size advantage and decent hand speed, but the more I think about it, the more I start to favor Cotto on superior athleticism and technique. Geale leaves a lot of openings to get hit (defense is overrated b/c most of his opposition is terrible) and doesn't really have any serious advantage in terms of age or "mileage on the odometer". And honestly, Geale isn't much of a puncher. I think Cotto wins a nice decision over him in a kinda meaningless fight.

I'm not a fan of Freddie Roach, but he has more say in who his guys fight probably more than any other trainer. He is very good at making sure his fighter has the advantage through style match-up, catch weight, etc. Canelo vs Cotto would have been a good fight. The problem there is the two diva both wanted the lions share. He knows GGG is a bad move. He recognized that Cotto vs Rodriguez would make Cotto look good, and knew how shot Martinez was.
I wish Cotto would rematch Trout to avenge that loss, but wishful thinking. Geale is at least a MW opponent, and will be a decent fight. Roach wouldn't allow it to happen if he didn't think Cotto matched up well.

The only diva in Canelo vs Cotto was Miguel.

I am guessing Cotto obviously wanted more money then? I haven't heard what kind of offer he turned down. Any negotiation details to share?

He didn't turn anything down. He was just sitting on the contract waiting for the May-Pac negotiations outcome, and Canelo got tired waiting.

Asking for your worth isn't being a diva lol. There are some weird ass logic boxing fans. Miguel has value in a Saul vs Miguel fight. Saul knows this, Miguel knows this, Oscar knows this. Miguel's being a pussy or pushover if he doesn't ask for it.

I don't think it was about money. It was about disrespect to the other party.

Oh you believe everything Bob Arum says
Although fwiw & tbf I don't think its NOT about that or that it coulda played a part. When you got two sides that are more even, which is a situation Saul isn't used to, things need to be worked with regards to both sides more. Saul's either been the A side & people are either willing or not willing to accept his terms or he's accepting Floyd's term to go after the number one spot.
This fight is the first fight where things were even-ish as far as negotiating strength. If you go in like all the times who've been the A side then yea that mighta had something to do with us not seeing this fight yet. Personally I believe if Saul had been open to fighting Miguel in NY on June 6 we'd be looking at this fight in a couple months, but Oscar & Saul were seemingly far to focused on hijacking Floyd's Cinco De Mayo date over all else.

I would like it. That would show that Cotto is serious about MW. Also by winning he would prove he belongs in the division. Then we could have a genuine big unification clash vs GGG.

Cotto is 2-2 in his last 4 fights over the last 3 years . Geale will demolish him.
