i dont believe Kovalev is a racist at all but what he tweeted was classless and insenstive. However, what he did was not done out of hatred or anger, but out of cultural ignorance.

Floyd Mayweather's racist rant however was filled with viotriolic hate. So in this situation I would say Floyd is the racist.

This isn't Kovalev's first racist incident tho. Floyd's rant was more of a mocking. Kovalev's past racism, and homophobia, have been downright hateful. Floyd had the decency to apologize. Kovalev has never apologized because he doesn't think his racism and homophobia is wrong.

I can't talk about Mayweather. I couldn't understand most of what he was saying.

Speaking about Kovalev, you need to understand that Russian level of democracy is 100-50 years behind the U.S. So, yes, most of Russians don't think that they need to be sensitive to other races, ethnic, religious groups or people with non-traditional sexual orientation. Kovalev is likely more tolerant and sensitive than an average Russian, but it doesn't make his tweet better.

If i remember correctly hes living in the states now so he better correct himself.

And if he doesnt want to then he can take his ass back to russia and keep living 50yrs in the past.

Both of them need to sort themselves out.

Kovalev is from the East and as has been pointed out already things are different over there and most people there don't see things the same way the west generally does. That doesn't make it right for any of them to offend though and it doesn't excuse it but people do need to understand the difference in mentalities. Being an international sportsman Kovalev has a responsibility to represent himself and his people properly in the same way the Klitschko's have, you would never, ever get Wladimir behaving disrespectfully.

The likelihood is that Kovalev see's this as a bit of fun, he doesn't seem to be filled with hatred there seemed genuine respect between he and Hopkins for example. If he does, he needs to learn that it isn't funny in the slightest.

Being from the U.S. Floyd should automatically know better.

Kovalev has balls. Love that guy. We get enough social intolerance from other direction. Everyone needs to be able to laugh a little and quit the racial double standards.

You rationalized why you think he may have done it but then go on to passively summarize it with but it doesn't make his tweet better.

That isn't exactly taking a stand against racism, you are passively condoning it.

Just further proof that sometimes folks who are not racist do and say things that are.

You wanna know if Kovalev is a racist all you have to do is look at who trains him, who it is that in a very real sense he entrusts his life to.

As for Floyd, yeah he said some horrible things too, but we all know the only color he cares deeply about is green.

Sergey Kovalev has been living in America for more than six years and he often requires assistance from an interpreter to answer simple questions posed by the media.

The fact that Sergey hasn’t become fluent in English suggests that he possibly socialises exclusively with fellow Russian expats and has not fully-embraced western culture, which is quite disappointing.

I’m not being overly critical of Kovalev, because I have personally never considered fighters as “good guys” or role models.

man the dude is a boxer, who trains to be the best light heavyweight boxer on the planet. i doubt that if you have a wife, a child and train like 6 days a week for professionel fights, that you have so much time left to learn to perfectly speak a foreign language.

...some of the posters here are just too sensitive...what Kovalev has done can be interpreted as stupid and probably offensive to some...was it racist? come on...considering the simple fact that we as human race evolved from apes/monkeys... :o ...some of you guys should go to the zoo and have a good laugh at our predecessors and yourselves just as I would do...having said that, Kovalev should really be more careful living in a different country as well as be made aware that whatever he says or does might be construed as an offense oftentimes where there was none intended...

If you want to believe that you evolved from apes and monkeys then that is your choice, many people don't accept that BS theory but if they do then they can consider themselves a monkey or an ape. We all know that it is often considered a racist and derogatory term to refer to a black person as a monkey, so if that doesn't bother you and you are black then you have a right to speak on it and if you are not black then you should not even bother to speak as to whether or not you think it is racist or not.

I think he was being as big a bigot and racist as any racemonger who utters the "N" word. Stop defending his racism and bigotry, unless you are just like that and think it is ok.

Football (soccer) players manage to obtain a moderately decent command of the English language after only a few months… and they train more frequently than boxers do.

In terms of a one-to-one basis, I suspect that Kovalev speaks to the media more frequently than football players do too.

If learning English doesn’t appeal to him, then I suppose that’s his business.

football player train more than a boxer hahahahaha....football players have so much free time...

So if someone calls you a racial name then it won't bother you? If you believe you came from a monkey then as I said before that is fine then you should have no problem calling yourself or having anyone else call you an ape or monkey but don't assume that black people will tolerate, like or allow you to do so just because you want to base what you are stating by using the BS Theory of Evolution to explain your argument.

Sure, just say that they are being too sensitive when you decide to call a black person a monkey or an ape to their faces when they are stomping yours into the ground.

...dude, whatever your race and irrespective of whether you are a god's creation or like myself a believer in science, strip naked, get in front of the mirror, take a close look at yourself and have a good laugh...that helps

Ok here is the deal: Stevenson is black (not an American) but his skin color is black and racist white people invented the derogatory term of calling black people "monkeys".

Do you get it now??

Maybe Kovalev is playing us. He knows he won't get as much stick for it because he's Russian but he'll still get the coverage.
