Who's the scariest fighter you've ever seen?

Just talking about Kirkland Laing on another thread, got me thinking about scary fighters - fighters who you wouldn't dare request an autograph from. Michael Moorer looked scary when he came to London with Emmanuel Steward in 1989 as a vicious-punching light-heavyweight. He just wandered around expressionless and looked almost robotic.
John Conteh was also pretty scary when I chatted to him for a few moments in Stoke.
But the worst for me would have to be Alan Minter. He gets pissed and wanders around looking for a fight. He's not one to cross.

I've never met him but Iran Barkley looks one scary dude. I remember watching him prowl around the ring before he slaughtered Darren Vann Horn.

He looked one bad mother that night.

Gerald McClellan, with all due respect to his present condition, was quite a horrible bastard.

Yes, I heard Minter could be a bit dodgy. One of his foes, Vito Antuofermo, also chinned a couple of lads when it kicked off at some function but I don't think he instigated it.

Several gypsies like a ruck out of the ring.

the early lennox lewis always looked a scary f*cker  he was 16 and a half stone of solid muscle and 6"5 tall  the only thing that let him down was that tufty at the back.

Great minds think alike mate. whilst i thought Hagler won, i done the same thing you said would do. Just for a laugh like, and because id had a drink.

Ive got to be honest and say that those 18 months i spent being spoon fed pured apples and undergoing numerous operations to get my face rewired, were truly the happiest times of my life!!

And the bonus is that thanks to the ensuing fecal incontinence i now suffer daily thanks to my ill attempted stab at humour, i now qualify for the higher band of Disability Living Allowance. Every cloud has a silver lining as they say...!

by The Devil In Roy Jones
Mike McCallum in his 1996 fight with Roy Jones Jr. McCallum's head is shaved bald and he has a creepy gray tint to his dark skin. I remember it particularly well as he was sitting on his stool during the rounds... perhaps it was just too much grease or something. All I know is that he looked like a fornicating zombie. Well scary.

Sonny Liston and George Foreman.

Keith Flint and Peter Culshaw both look like mass murderers.

Without a doubt - that's a couple of killers right there. Foreman as a preacher? Give me a break - take one look at his eyes and you'll see he's still a stone cold killer.

Eammon Magee is not someone you'd want to mess around with either.
Colin Jones was pretty scary too.

As I recall he bred fighting dogs didn't he, and even shot those he owned that didn't win. I have read various stories about him being a nasty git.

Mind you, most came from an ex-manager also I think. Do you really think he was as nasty as many people think?

James Toney could look pretty bloody mean when the mood took him.

Again, with all due respect to the poor bastard, he was definitely a vile bloke. He once bought a pet labrador from a shop, took it home, taped its mouth up and allowed his fighting dog to literally rip it to pieces.

There's no way the labrador would have won but McClellan didn't even want to give the thing a chance to defend itself - not that it should have been put in that position.

He was once driving through a big Floridian shopping complex where flamingoes roamed free. The hard man deliberately drove into one, mashing it and then went out of his way to kill some more. laughing all the while.

Nice guy, eh?

Yes, both of those are stories I have heard before about the G-Man.

I'm not saying they aren't true, but if you're an ex-manager with a grudge for some reason then... this is what you can get eh. Just questioning the source thats all.

He was a brilliant fighter for a while eh. I remember he was smething stupid like 1/3 to KO Nigel Benn in Round 1!! Something ridiculously short.

That is still one of the best fights I've seen. Nigel just wouldn't give in! :TU:

Yes I read some of that stuff in War Baby. Standard practice for fighting dog breeders I think.
Take cockfighters for instance, Roy Jones' favorite sport.
A standard practice to find out if your chickens are from good fighting blood is to take one of the brood, and cut its legs off.
Then put it in with a fully fit fighting cock and see if he fights to the very end.
And if you want to be really sure, pour some petrol on the legless bird and set him on fire. If he's a true fighting bird he'll keep attacking till he keels over and dies.
That's when you know you've got some real championship birds to train and make some decent money.
Now I'm not saying Roy does this, but there's plenty of breeders that do.

Makes boxing seem quite civilized doesn't it? :-?

To be honest, having watched the fight again, Nigel Benn should never have made it past the 1st round, the referee was blatantly protecting him, though quite why I don't know, as McClellan was the big money fighter.

Hmmm I suppose Benn's track record suggested he could take a lot of punishment in a fight and still come through. The ref, knowing this, felt Benn had maybe another round or so in him, and this proved right.

I'm an animal lover and abhor all that shit, whether standard practice or not. Disgusting and inexcusable. Indeed, makes the fight game seem civilized.

The ref in Benn-McClellan, Alfred Asaro, was poor. He did save Benn but I don't think it was deliberate - he was just incompetent.

The greatest fight in a British ring, well in the 20 years I've been following the sport anyway.
