Good post, nothing I disagree with there, though I thought Manny was 149lb for the fight? I think Manny's KO loss to Marquez made him more defensive since, which took away from his offense in this fight.fergusg wrote:Marcos Maidana’s work-rate in the first Mayweather fight was shockingly high, which I feel is the reason why Floyd was forced against the ropes more than he was accustomed to.jezzamundo wrote:Clearly Manny didn't set the kind of pace that some thought he would and he had a lot less offensive success than Maidana did against Floyd. That said, his lack of activity also meant that he took a lot less punches than Maidana did.
In order for the Argentine to land his own shots, he had to be in punching distance, which opened himself up for counters. In stark contrast, Pacquiao seemed to be discouraged by Floyd’s right hands, which meant that he was reluctant to close the distance for fear of being countered.
I thought that the size difference between Maidana and Pacquaio may explain the reason why Marcos was more willing to fight on the inside than Manny was (i.e. 165lbs versus 152lbs), as his size probably allowed him to cope with the right hand counters better than the Filipino legend was able to.

I got attacked quite aggressively for the following response I posted:bnovelist wrote:Can Floyd, really truely keep with Manny's furious pace? I mean EVERY exchange with Pac is HIGH STAKES...If miss one time, if you
are off balance, if you over commit yourself, any of these he tries to take you head off. EVERY EXCHANGE. Can Floyd deal with this for
12 FULL ROUNDS? Madaina is furious but his is more of a classic flat footed approach it's not the same as Manny's.For example:fergusg wrote:Floyd coped quite well with a 165lb version of Marcos Maidana who threw 858 heavy-handed punches over the course of 12 fast-paced rounds, which is 29% more shots thrown than Manny could manage against Algieri.
End of thread!
So now that the dust has settled, let’s compare my initial thoughts on this matter to the actual events that took place inside the ring on the 2nd May…IKSRTFO wrote:Maidana may be 29% more active but has NEVER been as accurate as Pacquiao… And Manny's pace which is more effective is different from Maidana's pace which is generally less ineffective
Marcos Maidana threw 858 punches and successfully landed 221 of them during his first fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The Argentine connected with 36 jabs and 185 power punches.
If we compare these stats to the punches that Pacquiao threw and landed during his fight with Mayweather Jr:
• Maidana threw twice as many shots as Pacquiao
• Maidana connected with 173% more punches than Pacquiao (i.e. 221 versus 81)
• Maidana landed with twice as many jabs than Pacquiao
• Maidana connected with 35% more power shots than Pacquiao
• Maidana was also far more accurate with his shots than Pacquiao (i.e. landing 34% of his power shots versus 19%)
When we bear all of the above stats in mind, we also need to consider that Pacquiao outweighed Mayweather by 3lbs, but Maidana outweighed Floyd by 17lbs on fight night!![]()
What do you think? “Can Floyd Honestly Keep With Manny's Pace??”![]()
