Set for July 11 in Magdeberg, Germany.
I'd love to see Francesco Pianeta defeat fat, inactive Ruslan Chagaev.

It's not a bad bout as such, but it's the WBA politics which open the contest up for criticism. As a stand alone bout it's a solid, European level contest, unfortunately it has a very nice bit of window dressing and comes at the expense of Brown who is a such a likable guy.

Title aside it's a solid match-up.

Politics sucks, but it's a good matchup. I'd too like to see Pianeta win the "title".

He's avoiding Browne, and WBA is letting him get away with it. :(

Yes. I think Pianeta is a bit better than most people believe, so it is an interesting matchup.

The story according to Chagaev's people is he had a television commitment he had to meet with a fight prior to meeting Lucas Browne.
It makes a total mockery of the WBA installing Browne as his mandatory and giving them 30 days or a purse bit to get the fight made. What a joke

To put it into perspective; Ruslan Chagaev is ranked 27 by the IWBR and Pianetta is ranked 39.
This is better than the average ranking for challengers for the WBA titles, who are the worst of the 5 sanction bodies for low ranked challengers.

Didn't Povetkin win their ''regular'' title when he beat Chagaev?
You know what? Don't bother answering that.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the strongman Putin installed there to.... umm... keep the peace, in a manner of speaking. Yeah, he's quite a brutal guy to my understanding.

One would have expected Chagaev would have been fighting Lucas Browne - who was after all his mandatory and the WBA ordered them to get a deal done - or Fres Oquendo - who went to court in an effort to enforce a rematch clause in his contract with Chagaev, and won the case and damages.
The Oquendo thing is a saga in itself. See next post.

There is a very interesting 3 part article on Chagaev vs Qquendo and their on-going scrap out of the ring at boxingtalk.com
Here's a very small extract on getting the first fight made :
As Wirt later testified: "The way I sold Fres and his brother on the idea (of the Chagaev fight) was, look, your wife’s sick, you know, let’s fly over there for two or three days and make the million—they’ve already offered you a million dollars. You’ll never make this kind of money anywhere. You know, if you don’t fight, you’ll be taken out of the rankings, you’ll be gone. I know you’re messed up in your head and you shouldn’t be fighting. Okay? It’s like somebody dies in your family, you’re grieving, you have a valid excuse."
Wirt also forwarded the message from Terek to Oquendo to assure him that Terek had actually agreed to both the $1 million purse and the rematch clause. Finally, Wirt also told Oquendo that Ryabinsky was, as Oquendo testified, “pretty much putting his name on the line to guarantee just in case Terek Box, Timur [Dugazaev] don’t pay on time.” Specifically, he told Oquendo that Ryabinsky had agreed to wire $1 million to Wirt to hold in escrow and that he had did, in fact, wired those funds to Wirt.
Oquendo changed his mind after the rematch clause was presented to him. He met Wirt at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport where he countersigned the agreement. At 5:57 p.m. on July 4, Wirt sent the fully- executed contract to Müller-Michaelis. At Müller-Michaelis’ request, Wirt sent him a photograph of Oquendo and his team at O’Hare at 5:55 p.m. Two minutes later, Müller-Michaelis replied: “Thank you. Take another one when everybody’s on the plane, please.” At 6:09 p.m., less than 15 minutes after the July Contract had been signed, Wirt emailed a photo of Oquendo and Tsatas seated on the plane, bound for Grozny via Warsaw. As Wirt recalled, they “barely made that flight.”

Did they even have the other party represented in that court ?

From what I heard, Oquendo originally agreed to a much smaller purse, but a few days before the fight when it was too late to find a replacement, he started demanding a million, so they had to agree.

Good question. Hard to imagine they weren't 'invited'.

Another question is how much weight that decision have. What if the other party gets (or already got) a favorable decision in a Russian court ? As far as I know, in Russia, if you want to sue somebody, you need to do it in a court in their region. Does it make the decision by a U.S. court invalid ?

The District Court Judge awarded Oquendo damages and interest in excess of $800,000 against Chagaev's promoter, Terek Box Event.
The test of the court's power will be whether those damages are actually paid or not I guess?

If the fight in the title of this thread happens, it will mean that the court decision is ignored by everybody including WBA.

You can resolve a lot of things when you've got loads of money.
