Frankie Gomez didn't make weight.

His fight with Humberto Soto was cancelled because Gomez came in at 147.5. How the fornicate do you come in 7 and a half pounds over the weight limit. Extremely unprofessional. I don't believe his excuse of being sick for not making weight. I hope he is punished financially for his lack of discipline.

He has a history of discipline problems, so I'm also suspicious that him being sick was the reason for his weight. The article below was written before yesterday's weigh-in, and according to it Golden Boy held an intervention for him at one point but he didn't even show for that!

On Saturday night, Frankie Gomez opens up the HBO broadcast – featuring the Texas shootout between Saul Alvarez and James Kirkland – from Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas against veteran Humberto Soto in his first real step-up fight.

A couple of years ago, it seemed like “Pitbull” wouldn’t even make it this far. After tasting unexpected international success before his 18th birthday and signing a lucrative deal with Golden Boy Promotions, Gomez came in with big expectations. However, he discovered that fighting for trophies and medals doesn’t quite carry the same burden as being a professional prizefighter on whom a company has staked six-figures.

Early on, he was undisciplined and simply didn’t understand the responsibilities that came with being a pro. Boxing was now a job and, quite frankly, he was missing work much too often. There were missed training sessions, troubles in making weight and life-and-death affairs against the likes of Adrian Granados.

Golden Boy wasn’t seeing a return on their early investment and they basically staged an intervention (which by the way, ironically, he didn’t show up for).

With his height and reach, Golden Boy is probably setting him up for failure by trying to make him a light welterweight instead of welterweight. Also, they aren't helping his discipline problems by putting him in the ring with bums like they have in the past. I would be trying to match him with top 75 or maybe top 100 welterweights every time out, to give him a reason to train; plus then you get to make some money off of him instead of just getting burned by him.

Not sure what is going on with Gomez but something isn't right.
As for weight issues in boxing, yes it's a pain hearing that boxers don't make weight.
But the reality is a lot different, outside of the Heavyweight division it's fair to say almost all boxers don't actually box at the weight they're competing at.
It's among the biggest problems in the sport.

Soto would have been a nice step up...too bad he couldnt hack it. With matchups like that GBP is obviously trying to help him, but if he doesnt even show at an intervention meeting then there's not much they can do!!
The point is that if you match him up stiffly enough and he incurs some pain in the ring, he might actually learn the value of training. That could've even happened tonight, but he was able to avoid fate by weighing vastly above the limit. Wouldn't have happened if it was a welterweight fight.
