'Journalists' have regularly ripped off the hard graft put in boxing websites , often lifting interviews not just word for word, but page by page and given no credit whatsoever.

But when they build a story around a website article, and then credit it, they wrongly think they have extended courtesy to said website.

So I find it cringeworthy that Powell has ran with the headline "Stats Prove" - and then credits the worst click-bait website in history. Talk about backfire ! to run a ridiculous headline is one thing, to have perhaps the worst trolling site in history as your 'proof' takes the cake.

"One dedicated website in America, Boxing News 24, sat its leading commentators down to monitor the video, first at actual speed, then in slow motion, finally frame by frame." he writes, completely and utterly unaware that nearly all the different names used to post bile against hard working boxers, all come from one person who uses multiple aliases like Scott Gifoid and Ambrose whatever.

I genuinely think there should be a cull of these geriatric fools from boxing, and we can throw in a few commentators too. The sport desperately needs new life injecting into it. Some ex-boxers can cut it, but I've found many don't even care that much about the sport anymore and are jaded with it by the time they get behind a mic. The print press and television should get some of the new blood on board and push them to the front, because a lot of old guard are going senile and treading water until they can draw a pension - which is obvious in their lazy journalism and complete lack of excitement on screen.

I cant remember which fight, for some reason im think Froch Taylor - but someone posted a link to the radio coverage and it was fantastic, better than watching the fight itself. I often accidentally catch top goals scored overseas in La Liga - and the commentators go absolutely wild and capture the spirit perfectly.

The UK print and TV is completely stale, contrived and downright blind if you count the draw result handed in by our prominent journalists, or the coverage of Burns Figueroa.

Embarrassing that is. There'll be quite a few who don't know much about boxing, read that and think Manny was unlucky. Has he got a hidden agenda or something?

Can you imagine boxrec news, Boxing Monthly, Boxing News or BS or another dedicated website running that headline, then using boxing news 24 as their 'proof'.

So to see a so-called stalwart of boxing doing it in national press, is horrendous - or at very best, completely out of touch and thus validating my point that a cull is needed.

I'm sure jeff and his compatriots are very nice people, but this is all about judging the product - and it's a solid 0/10 here.

May Pac for example, was littered with "tickets are going for as much as $xxxxx and the fight will be full of A-listers" , which has been said about a billion times. Nobody had the foresight to before or after, to get the byline on the parties involved in the fight - and subsequently there is a seperate debate now going on about prominent fighters like Bhop and Malginaggi questioning the validity of Manny's injury, giving numerous examples of athletes with even minor torn cuffs who cannot wipe their own backside with the affected limb, let alone fight for 12 rounds. But alas nobody cares about that.

This is fecking ridiculous and has no place in our sport! This idiot needs to have a word with himself! It's one thing being in denial but it's a completely different story when you're just being a total penis!

Jeff Powell has long been a lazy boxing hack. Sure he's a good writer, but most of his news and views seem to come from straight from press releases.

I remember a few years ago he twice confused Vitali with Wladimir Klitschko - inexcusable for a professional boxing journalist.

Didn't David Haye ban him from one of his press conferences?

that's hilarious, what a clown he is. I saw the headline, and presumed he was trying to justify his completely bizzare read of the fight ( think he said Manny won ? ) and didn't actually read it....but to see he's resorted to backing up his "theory" with the laughably bad beyond belief boxing news 24 is as misguied as I've ever seen.
He should be sacked immediately or do the decent thing and quietly retire. He's a complete laughing stock.

The BBC Radio 5 commentary team are consistently excellent. Ironic for a corporation that disowns the sport. Isn't it usually Mike Costello or John Rawling?

mostly Costello though i think you are right Rawling may have done the odd one.

There is clearly not enough money in the journalistic side of the sport to churn out a constant stream of good writers. I find the best place for opinons on fights is on Twitter, I follow a fair few accounts on there that give somewhat unbiased opinions and often back it up with actual sources and facts/stats.

The good thing about Jeff Powell is that at least he is a dedicated boxing journalist and for a very popular paper.

With regards to his article; I remember Powell on a ringside about boxing media and how it has changed (I think it had Tris Dixon of BN and Kugan Casius on it.)

I remember Powell seemed to know nothing about digital media, and was staunchly defending old school journalism.

So he may be fairly clueless about the reputation of said website (I've never looked at it either to be fair.) He seems naive about the internet and this may be reflected in the article source.

(Or he's just looking for justification for his view :D )

(Or someone at Boxing News 24 passed him a brown envelope for the PR gift!)

I'll be honest I'd never heard of that website until I read that article, but it was the biggest pile of poo I've ever read. I hope he stumbles upon this thread and realises how much of a nob he's been. :witzend:

The problem is there is just no call for full time boxing writers anymore whether we like it or not. Couple that with the fact that pretty much every promoter/boxer now have pr machines and many social outlets available to them and any buffoon can start a Youtube channel and play at interviewing then its no wonder quality and standard is poor
