Joe Calzaghe has just returned from a successful week-long training camp in Sardinia, as he prepares to tackle IBF light-heavyweight champion Glen Johnson on July 24.

Calzaghe was ruled out of their June 12 clash with a bad back, but is now recovering from the injury and looking in good shape.

He was accompanied on the seven-day trip to the picturesque island by father/trainer Enzo - who is from Sardinia – and WBO super-featherweight title challenger Gavin Rees.

“Joe is looking good, and on course to be ready for July 24,” confirmed Enzo.

Johnson was allegedly made an improved offer of 600,000 dollars to fight Calzaghe on July 24. He's been offered a million dollars to fight a fading Roy Jones in September, with the winner to meet Antonio Tarver.

Yes, some mysterious occurences indeed, one for tales of the unexplained methinks.

Calzaghe's back has healed up mysteriously, despite it being so bad he couldn't possibly fight less than 2 weeks ago.

His fear of flying which has prevented him travelling overseas to take on his big-name opponents (though not it seems to attend fights or training camps), has been cured suddenly, though will almost certainly return if Johnson insists that Calzaghe fight him in the states.

Despite the fact that Johnson seems intent on fighting Jones, in a fight which will surely make him much more money, and offer him amazing opportunities if he wins, Calzaghe seems oblivious.

Sounds to me like Sports Network have convinced him that they have legal ties over Johnson, though how that wouls stand up in court I am not sure, surely there is nothing which forces a fighter to make a new date if their opponent pulls out? Perhaps they have come to better terms on the fight with Johnson.

surely something shoud be done if they are selling tickets on a pretense that the fight is going ahead and then get some TBN then a late sub, Im not saying this is definitely happening but if it does turn out that way, I think thats DISGUSTING.

Thing is, Johnson's people are going to find it very hard work negotiating with King Roy ( even if he doesn't have a title ). Roy will want it all, including rights on Johnson's first born.

Maybe Sportsnutwork are counting on this - then if it fails, fall back on their long trusted tactic of bait and switch. Anyone got Kid "No Fire" McIntyre's number?

Not as hard as you might think, now that Roy doesn't have a title, he cannot afford to be such a hardass, after all if he beats Johnson, he has far more leverage with Tarver, so it's better in the short term to give Johnson a decent payday.

Well from Roy's point of view, I doubt he really thinks he needs an IBF title to get Tarver in the ring again.
Tarver is after the real title, the P4P one. He'd likely jump at the chance to beat Roy again. At this exalted level, titles don't really mean a helluva lot.

Jones with a title will get more cash than Jones without one, and he's got to fancy himself to beat Johnson.

I think this will come to a head in the next few weeks when, as MW said, Johnson finds out just how far he's going to have to bend over to let Roy's negotiating agents shaft him, and when the press conference season starts for Johnson - Calzaghe. No point buying tickets for this one just yet.

What's Clinton Woods doing at the moment? Any chance he'd take Calzaghe on three weeks' notice? If FW's that generous.

I thought Roy was shown SOME heart by fight Tiozzo, but I think Johnson is a better fighter than Fabrice at this stage.

I wouldn't like to second guess what is going on, perhaps given that the IBF accept Joe's official reasoning he can get a high ranking with them for next month's rankings (#1?). Its probably the best (i.e. only) chance of Jones vs Calzaghe will happen.

Can Johnson pull out of this one? After all he did sign a contract maybe he did not read the small print that says that Calzaghe is allowed one pull out of evey major fight. I think it will happen as Sports Network will sue him if a Jones fights happens. I can understand Johnson being pissed off but I think he should take the fight in my view he will kick Calzaghe's arse and shut both him and his loud mouth father up.

The fact that their website should choose to put this nonsense up the very day before they confirm that the fight is off and Joe is not going to fight before the autumn just demonstrates to me, as if proof were needed, that SN is a joke organisation on the way down. That's my opinion.

July 24, the date for the abortive Calzaghe-Johnson bill, could now see Jason Cook defending his IBO lightweight title at Bridgend. Perhaps, an opportunity for Dean Phillips to challenge his Welsh rival.

WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe will not be fighting on July 24 at the Cardiff International Arena because of a re-occurrence of his back injury. Promoter allegedly said the injury is worse than first thought. Promoter allegedly said, "This is a bitter blow for Joe who has had a bad time recently. He will now have a good rest and seek further treatment from specialists during the summer and will return to the ring in September." As a consequence of Calzaghe’s withdrawal the Sports Network show at the C.I.A has been cancelled.

It was also revealed that the contract for the Calzaghe-Glen Johnson fight stated that the fight would take place within 90 days if either boxer got injured. The Johnson camp, however, passed on the recheduled July 24 date and is reportedly headed toward a September 25 HBO date with Roy Jones Jr. Warren said that matter is now in the hands of his attorney Judd Burnstein.
