Keith Thurman vs Luis Collazo

Apparently this is set for July 11th, with Tony Harrison and Willie Nelson fighting each other (I believe at 154) on the undercard.

A disappointing match-up in my opinion, though Harrison-Nelson is decent.

Bit of a letdown I expected something different, Collazo looked to have slipped quite significantly in the Khan fight.

Collazo is shot. Another Haymon waste of time.

Well that takes Thurman out of the Mayweather September sweepstakes

People nutter on themselves when Khan fought Collazo. But Thurman fights him and it's a joke. I love the double standard. Thurman will win this convincingly

I didn't think Collazo-Khan was a good match-up, and given how badly Collazo was outclassed I certainly can't get up for this either.

The undercard fight is better than the headliner.

Damn, Keith Thurman's opposition is so much better than Amir Khan's opposition. To cite a specific example, Luis Collazo is way better than Luis Collazo.

This is an underwhelming announcement, to say the least.

Makes it even better that Thurman has been slagging Khan for not fighting 'true' welterweights or 'shot' fighters

Problem is that the Welterweight division is, unfortunately, not as deep as people keep suggesting.

Yes you have Mayweather and Pacquiao, the top two on paper still despite both looking likely to retire soonish.

Then you have Brook, Khan, Bradley, Thurman who are all looking for a big payday and have plenty of talent, but don't want to risk a possible big payday then.

You have the guys who have a name value but appear to have major flaws, are unproven or have serious question marks, JMM, Rios Algieri, Porter, Ali.

Take out the guys the guys who are now signed up for bouts and Maidana, who has eaten himself out of action, and there isn't many options out there.

For what it's worth I don't think much of Thurman and this isn't me defending him. Just pointing out that the division isn't great.

Huh? I see it compeltely different. Not everone was happy with the Khan Collazo match-up. Also Thurman has slated Khan for "not proving himself at Welterweight" but is now fighting a boxer Khan's already dominated at WW :-?

I agree, and even if someone thought Khan-Collazo was an okay fight at the time why shouldn't they think otherwise about Thurman-Collazo in light of it clearly being shown that Collazo isn't at that level?

There's nothing wrong with an opinion changing as evidence changes.

fergusg wrote:Keith Thurman is being groomed for “big things”, but he’s fairly inexperienced at the highest level, which is the reason why he’s being matched-up against semi-decent fighters that are past-their-respective-primes.

Before the Robert Guerrero fight, he’d never shared the ring with an opponent that was actually ranked within the top-ten 147lb-ers (at the time he fought them), despite being gifted the WBA “regular” world title (without even knowing about it himself).

Before the Amir Khan fight, I would have claimed that Collazo’s strengths were his ring IQ and defence, so I thought he was a crafty fighter that would have been an awkward test for almost anyone.

However, the New York native decided to emulate Jake LaMotta’s defensively irresponsible fighting style, by becoming a reckless brawler that stalked Khan with his hands constantly by his sides, whilst absorbing Amir’s heavy blows.

So it’s kind of a “flip of a coin” type fight, as Thurman could either stop Luis or be taken the distance, depending on which version of Collazo decides turns up that night. :o
Yeah so it's a gatekeeper type opponent at this time in Collazo's career which is fine but Thurman talks a much bigger game so we want to see him prove it.

More Khan haters here, ha? Collazo/Khan got some steam only bc Collazo beat Ortiz so badly (at the time, Ortiz was considered to be a pretty good fighter, not a dancer). Khan then shuts Collazo out and makes him look like an amateur, so what's Thurman got to gain by beating a guy that's already been undressed like that in public?

This Thurman, I just can't figure out. He finally get a step up fight against a quality opponent only to follow it up with a fight like this? Garbage. More PBS BS... I'll tape it or something and maybe watch it.

Thurman keeps yapping for the elite fighters, this is not a way to get the attention he's looking for.

Collazo sucks.

Thurman wanted Khan, porter, brook or Maidana instead but they didn't want him.

Crap fight to stay busy I guess. Maybe he can fight Algieri next like the other elite guys are doing.

If Thurman doesn't knock Collazo out, it will be his third fight in a row that has gone the distance, and the third time in a row he's shared a ring with someone who knows how to box. Coincidence?

Wow, total garbage matchup. In Haymon's huge stable this is the best he could do? We couldn't at least get Thurman/Berto? Let alone the fights we SHOULD be getting, like Thurman/Brook, Thurman/Khan, Thurman/Maidana, etc.

If Haymon is gonna follow the UFC gameplan and get a huge roster of top fighters under one roof, the least he could do is follow through like the UFC does and give us the best fights possible. This is like if the UFC headlined a card with Rory MacDonald vs. Patrick Cote.

Agreed!

What a garbage fight, of all the people Thurman could've been matched with they give him this has been. It's funny that Khan gained mileage off of beating Luis but Keith is going to receive nothing.

When Amir won all his fans was talking about how improved he was and whatnot as though it took a wizard to hit a fighter who followed him around with his hands down at his side begging to be tagged, lol (so called boxing fans these days).

Agree with a lot of the above comments - after the decent win over Guerrero expected Thurman to be matched accordingly pushing towards the real higher elite levels of the ww division this matchup feels like a real step down!

Personally I would rather Thurman fight a washed up guy than sit out for a year, like some guys do. (like Andrade is) Its hard to get big fights when the big names don't want to fight him. I'm sure Haymon has something to do with it too, but your dance partner has to be willing first. At the very least in this crap match-up we can see another common opponent of Thurman & Khan. I am guessing the result will make Khan even more elusive about the thought of fighting Thurman.
