Soulan Pownceby has been selected to box for New Zealand at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece this summer despite having served four years for the manslaughter of his five month old child.

Pownceby was jailed in 1995 and has since been convicted seven times, the last being for assault on a woman four years ago.

There have been many groups opposed to Pownceby's selection but the New Zealand Boxing Association has confirmed that following a conference call among its members, they are happy to stick by their decision, saying his behaviour on previous International duty has been exemplary.

Sounds like a nice guy!

I boxed a bit in NZ, and the NZ boxing scene is jam packed with rum types. No suprise they've let him through, I don't really know what legal right they would have had to stop him because he won the Oceania title. I'll see if I can fnd out a bit more about him.

Interestingly, even the fairly Conservative national papers are just presenting this as a curiosity and aren't really kicking up a fuss until they've decided which way to go.

Good. Not that we'll get to see it. The BBC seem to be making a deliberate effort to avoid showing boxing. Wankers.

In Denmark will will pretty much be able to see all the afternoon sessions, but only very few of the evening sessions.

Bloody hell. That's marvellous. I watched the Beeb Olympic coverage earlier today and they switched from too much swimming (Mr Politcally Correct himself, Tony Blair, was watching at poolside), to a judo bout, then to...sailing.

We have 4 channels that shows the olympics at the moment (+ Eurosport) so we get to see alot of different sports. All 4 are showing at the same time during the morning/afternoon but only 1 or 2 in the evening. Since we are a big handbell nation they are showing ALL handball matches live :x

Personally I prefer the first week or so before the athletics begin. up until then we get to see a wide variety of sports before the athletics start. then all we ever get is day after day of watching people run round and round a running track. if we're lucky we get to see the odd moment of something other than running round a track, a bit of javelin or long jump etc. but ive usually switched off by that point. the prospect of watching someone going 20 odd times round a track really doesnt appeal.

its a shame really as im sure theres many other minority sports who could benefit from a decent amount of coverage. after all its the olympics and not just an atheltics meeting

Dirrel looks good for the US.

I was really not impressed by Dirrell, he was very open for overhand rights, and IMO he should have been able to beat the Ha much bugger than he did.

Good speed and he can probably fight a lot better than that. He already beat the Cuban in the pre tournament pretty convincingly.

Yeah this digital BBC is brilliant, I've had it on the boxing all day, but I've only been half watching so far. Any upsets yet?

Yes I think it's back on interactive 3, 5pm to 8.30.

Was it a turk and an hungerian who had a real good fight in this morning session. The Hungerian won in the end, quality contest - two fighters to look out for in the pro's. I think the Hungerian is one of the pre-games favourites.
