How did Steve Robinson go from......

domestic journeyman to world champion?

23 fights 9 defeats beofre meeting John Davison for the vacant featherweight title, and am i right in saying Robinson was a late replacement? After that night and beating Davison Robinson went on to defend the title 7 times to some pretty decent opposition including Paul Hodkinson, Duke McKenzie and Colin McMillan who were no mugs. So what changed after the Davison fight in terms of his regime, attitude and his general boxing skill? After meeting Hamed and getting beat then getting beat by Billy Hardy, he put in a decent run again winning the Euro title before going back to the losing run of 6 before the end of his career.

I would say Robinson has to be one of those Rocky kind of guys who got a shot and took capitolised, but then went on at the end to be just another journeyman.

Fantastic story though.

Where was Robinson ranked by the WBO before he stepped in to take on Davison? He lost his last fight before he fought for the title, so was this another case of a fighter miraculousy appearing in the top 15?

Pretty sure he had 24 hours notice for Davison fight and just turned up in an inspired mood and won the split, thing is Robinson was a gym rat and was always super fit, the Davison win made him believe in himself and his skills and sent him on an amazing run of wins becoming in the process the highest paid feather in the world averaging 250k per fight, the boy done good :TU:

Do your research. Fighter tested positive for HIV, Robinson stepped in.

Hi Mimmy,

Finally got to register here ... Thanks again for tape 104! Let's see if there is some more of top amateur footage hidden in the coming tapes :-)

You really do great work sharing all those fights, congratulations once again.

Would you know anyone who could help me in getting amateur footage of that era ( as a reminder: World Cups and Champs, Pan Am and Olympic Games, and other competitions from 1986 to 1999)?

Many greetings

I thought id go down memory lane and watch the Robinson - Hoko fight.

I tell you what fellas, I don't go much for anthems, usually, and its become comical how US soul singers slaughter their anthem, but if you want to check out how it should be done have a look at Terry Thomas belting it out before this fight

Absolutely fvcking bazzing.

I wonder what Stevie does now? God I remember that Naseem Hamed fight so vividly. They always seemed to be open air stadiums in those days.

Very much the Cinderella Man but with a Welsh accent!
I think that post-Davison he was able to go full-time as a pro - up until that point he was working as a storeman - and that made a huge difference.
The interesting thing was that Hamed did not finish him....he was still very competitive and adding some good scalps to his resume and held the European title for a while. He was apparently extremely unlucky/robbed to only get a draw against Welcome Ncita out in South Africa...and Ncita was very decent indeed. Even very late in the day he was fighting people like Kovacs and holding his end-up.

Steve runs a gym now & does some PT. A few of my mates train with him, he's ridiculously fit & still absolutely ripped.

I believe he does a fair amount of crossfit, but think he still focusses on boxing training. I think he also trains Craig Kennedy, a rising star on the Welsh boxing scene.
