I think being a boxing fan is a disease.

My wife said to me the other day "Were getting rid of SKY, all we ever watch is boxing or tape Boxing, and youve got all these books and magazines, and your an anorak with a fetish for Boxrec".

I replied... "You dont understand, I was born like this, its an illness, a condition I'm trying to control, I dont enjoy being like this.

Its a condition called Boxingfanitis.

The Concise Oxford lists the meaning of "Boxingfanitis" as "a condition where the sufferer actually seeks and enjoys supreme dissapointment in following the sport of pugilism".

It certainly is a disease and a threat to good health

Well I'm not sure it's a disease, but I've been addicted to Boxing since I was about 9.

As far as I'm concerned EVERYONE should love boxing.

The only people who don't are the ones who have no appreciation of how hard it is. Oh and women.

Which is most people, unfortunately.

I am very sick indeed, I keep watching and buying fights that took place 10, 20, 50 years ago!. Watching SKY often makes me sick! as does allegedly!..... I think myself that Warren could cure many people of their addiction to boxing and he is one of the reasons I mainly watch fights of over 20 years ago now!.
It's worth remembering also that the word fan is short for FANATIC!.... there you go!.
As for the women, when ever my girlfriend gets tired of watching Roberto Duran or Saad Muhammad I point out that I could instead be a footie fan and that generally does the trick!!! 8)

I'm feeling better already. Being a boxing fan is much better than being a football fan. Bunch of pillow biters them footballers :P

i became hooked on boxing when i was 6 i got up one sunday morning and saw mike tyson kick trevor berbick's backside in 2 rds and from then on made sure i watched all of mike tyson's world title fights. itv used to show em delayed at 9:30 in the morning.

i went off it for a few years when sky got the boxing but now and again i listened to the big fights on the radio. but since i've got sky i'm back with it again.

i was a little mike tyson obsessive in those days i was gutted when douglas beat him, in tears i was.

i'll never forgive him for what he did to holyfield in that 2nd fight though he crossed the line there. :x

This is a funny one coz there are a lot of people out there who don't really like boxing but will go ask Ricky Hatton for his autograph if they see him.

There are a lot of people who are against boxing because it is seen as a dangerous sport, (when infact it is one of the safest)

I think it is the average ponce who is shit scared to fight, or stand up for anything, that seems to be ever growing in todays society and destroying the oldest and most natural sport in the book.

No boxing is not an illness it is a sport for people who still have a bit of pride in themselves.

if i may be so bold.... as a medical man i am familiar with many states of the human mind. however you use the prefix -itis. this actually is, im afraid, incorrect. The prefix -itis, in fact refers to " the swelling of.." or to be more precise " the inflamation of.."" (greek/latin) hence the terms appendicitis, tonsilitis etc. You are stating that in effect you are suffering from "a swelling of the boxing fan". What balderdash.

May I suggest something along the lines of an obssesive compulsive disorder?

Of course, most of you leaned that distinction in grammar school, as did I.

There is a virus (euphemistically speaking, of course - don't get confused Neil) within the sport, but it's not the fans who have it.

Same here that was the 1st fight i can remember at 7 yrs old and i've been watching ever since.

If I may be so pedantic ;): It's a suffix, and it doesn't strictly mean swelling or inflammation of - back to remedial medical school (remedical school?) with you, my friend!
