he really looks hurt on that picture that was posted, he wasn't that bad as a fighter, just ran into the greatest puncher in boxing history.

his next fight he held his punches back, and defeated roland lastarza in a 10 rounder, the next time he [Marciano] fought lastarza he ruined him.

I read the account of the Vingo fight and the Rock said he's never been hit harder. I got to agree that Rocky held back big time in his next fight. As raw as Marciano wS he was a truly fearless and fearsome fighter.

yes, rocky was the greatest, no one could punch harder, credit charley goldman for knowing what to do with rocky as a fighter.

Alot of people fail to remember or mention that this fight (Marciano/Vingo) essentially was THE contest to determine the next up and coming star on the East Coast. This was a cross-roads battle. Whoever won was going to be considered the next big deal in the business. The loser, well, was stuck fighting pugs from the Bronx for the next few years. Marciano was made more than aware of this. If he impressed, he was going to get LaStarza and be a stone's throw away from the title.

Marciano went gangbusters on Vingo. But Carmine more than held his own. It was a brutal, hard hitting, and fast paced war. Vingo was 6'4" and towered over Rocky and it really was give and take. Then of course, as we know, he got hit flush with that last shot and went to sleep and when he woke up, he was paralysed on one side and never fought again. The win left a sour taste in Marciano's mouth, because he was a tender hearted guy. It didn't help matters either that Vingo's mother smacked Rocky across the face when he came to visit him and see if he was okay.

Everyone was certain that Rocky would never fight again, or if he did he'd never be the same type of guy again in the ring. The next fight, solidified that in people's minds, when he looked lackluster against LaStarza. Hell, to this day some believe LaStarza got robbed in that fight. Eventually, Rocky did get back into the swing of things and began knocking guys out. The only time he ever appeared "punch to kill" again was when he rematched LaStarza and his old foe said in the press that Rocky was punch-drunk, etc. and of course Marciano would kayo him in 11 rounds.

As for Vingo, with his height and toughness and abilities, who knows how good or great he could have been. I can see him in today's world (of dehydration and rehydration techniques) fighting at 175 pounds and probably being a beast at that division. Hell, he could have been a Cruiserweight champion. We'll never know. But a guy that tall, rangy, tough, etc. makes you think he was something special. He just happened to face a man who hit harder and was a bit more fierce.

Rest in peace Carmine and Jesus bless.
