Although he was not a huge draw at any point, Ward has gone off peoples radars by not fighting. He returned against an opponent no one was very excited to see him against on a day when there was a bigger card in Vegas, so his shouldn't be a surprise at all. He needs to reestablish himself with fans and there are a few opponents he could take on to regain recognition as one of the best in the sport. A lot of people want to see him against Golovkin, but short of that, there could be Froch rematch, Kovalev at 175, and recently Degale has come into prominence at 168.

Ward boxed beautifully against Smith, if he boxes like that again against high class opposition he'll get more fans guaranteed - there was no mauling no holding, lots of very clean hitting and a brilliant display of every punch in the book.

He wasn't mauling or holding because he didn't need to. When he faces somebody who can hurt him, then he is abusing holding.

Sounds like you have a grudge of some sort against Ward, Ikory.

Maybe it's because, deep (or not so deep) in your heart, you know that he'll eventually whip your beloved GGG or that other, bigger Russian guy if the bouts are ever arranged.

Class eventually rises to the top.

I wouldn't make too much of the ratings. Viewers were already watching the Broner card on NBC when the telecast began, and besides, BET isn't a cable network that most people go to for boxing. When's the last time BET televised a fight?

No grudge, just stating what is known to everybody: Ward is doing excessive holding.

I hope the fight with Golovkin happens, so that Gennady can prove that you are full of sh1t like Kovalev did previously.

Poor poor senor pipino never recovered from the Kovalev/Hopkins beatdown...he's been crying ever since pausing only to come and rag on the "russians" on boxrec a bit to make himself feel a little better.

I think Ward KO's GGG at 168 and Kovalev beats Ward at 175.
The main reason GGG loses is not because he is a less talented boxer than Ward but he is the smaller human being.

How do you think Ward looked after the long layoff? I thought his opponent didn't perform that well, but Ward looked very solid physically.

Maybe the numbers were low but it was on BET which might be an extra speciality channel people have to pay extra for depending on their region , not an excuse for Ward but it might have played a role who knows.
As for Andre himself he looked fairly good, his jab was sharp and he worked well on the inside although Paul Smith did catch him well somewhere during the mid rounds, it might have been the 7th I'll have to watch it again.
I think Ward needs 1 more tune up against an upped opponent from Smith and he should be ready to roll against the top boys.

Ward looked okay. He didn't hold as much as usual, but Smith was just there for the cheque and didn't test him.

What was most disappointing is that Ward felt he needed to cut Smith over the eye with a head butt. Perhaps he realized he's feather-fisted, and his flush punches have little effect unless the opponent has a cut. Without the head butts, he could have easily cruised to a wide decision win though - he was in no danger of losing.

It makes 100% sense that Freedom doesn't understand BET.

Unfortunately only people without an ulterior motive will see things this way, they won't go out of their way to find something negative to say about him just because the of his ethnicity.

My stomach started feeling sick when I saw Stephen Curry leading the Ward entourage.

In any event, who wanted to watch this useless squash match? We all knew it was going to be a glorified sparring session. Furthermore, I saw ZERO advertising for this fight...

He never attacked Ward because of his skin colour.
Head butts - I didn't see it, perhaps he could point out what round he's talking about and I'll take a look at it closely.

That's not true. I've had many friends of Irish heritage like Ward's father. I used to hang around a lot with someone named Ward when I was a boy - he was a nice guy.

And I wouldn't attack someone because he's African-American on his mother's side either - I was rooting for Green, Dawson and Bika when they fought Ward.

It was on concurrently with Lemieux/N'Dam; I switched up to it occasionally during commercials.
