Boxing News - Scott Quiqq article

Thought I'd mention how good I found the Quigg article in this weeks boxing news, I have seen many comments on here recently for and against Boxing News with some people saying that its no longer aiming to be a 'british magazine'.

Either way if they are aiming to be a British magazine or not, I found that article in particular to be a great piece of work.

I 100% favour Frampton in any likely match up between the two but I have always liked watching Quigg fight and will continue to do so. It was good to get a further insight into his personality and good to see him talking about some of the criticisms people have made of him.

Good work Boxing News. :TU:

I really enjoyed the article as well, Quiggle seems a little strange but in a good way. I think he's a little underated and imagine he'd really dig down in a hard bout. Got to say, packing in school at 14 to train full time is pretty insane but it looks to be paying off.

Quigg is very very dedicated.

I would really like to read this piece, but how can £3 or whatever boxing news is just for this?

I scrolled through the magazine in store and was unimpressed with the rest of the content

Ive certainly spent £3 on worse but can understand that the magazine isn't gonna please everyone.
Quigg comes across as very likeable but can't see him ever generating a huge fan base which he seems to accept. The part about quitting school is absolutely crazy right enough.

I can't understand the idea of needing a British magazine, we need magazines that cover the sport in general...

really enjoyed the quigg article, got inside scott's head. you've got to have a lot of respect for quigg, he is a good old fashioned sportsman, just loves his craft and doesnt care about any pr nonsense. flexen doesnt pull punches either, he tackled the slow-witted thing in there too which gave the article credibility.

if i had any issue with boxing news this week it's the 60 second interview... why choose that fella?

He had photos of me in women's clothes. Normally I wouldn't mind but they were a size 18!

Thanks for all the positive comments. Means a lot on here.

After reading about the article I got a hold of my nephews copy to get a read of it. Absolutely first class. Up to the same standard as the previous one on Kevin Mitchell.
What was good with both articles was the way they were able to describe in detail what these lads were like as individuals not simply well known boxers. I tried to do the same with my biographies on Dave Charnley, Tony Sibson and Henry Wharton but I know I wasn't as successful as I wanted to be , but Danny seems to have the knack. Well done.

That means the world coming from you. I've never wanted to write the generic... when did you start boxing/what were your amateur highlights/who trains you pieces. Human interest is my wheelhouse and I think boxing has such a wonderful spectrum of personalities and stories, plus the access we writers are afforded to the subjects compared to other sports is incredible. I used to do a recurring feature in BN called Beyond the Ropes and the recent articles are really an extension of that.

I have a Crolla piece next on July 14-16. For my money, it's significantly better than the Quigg and Mitchell features. Please look out for it because until this forum rates it I can't be sure it's any good.

ill look forward to that crolla one, about time there was a decent one. there was a really poor piece in boxing monthly a few issues ago "he really is a million dollars" or some nonsense like that. id like to know what he's really like (as in a real piece like the quigg and mitchell articles rather than sycophantic tosh)

I too think Quigg is underated and cops a bit too much stick at times , he is one of the best bodypunchers on these shores for a while now

Let's not criticise anyone as it takes us away from the key purpose of the thread... praising me ;)

It was by me. The million dollar bit was a riff on his surname and a pun as fighters who chase down burglars on the eve of a world title shot, suffer a fractured skull and broken ankle then get cleared to box again before going into a world title fight are ten a penny so I wanted to hammer that home.
:TU: yeah, no story there.

I've said it before on here but I really do think Quigg gets a lot of stick because his paper title, the fact that he's with Eddie and the fact we have Frampton in the same division and it seems to be the popular choice to root for Carl

Don't get me wrong I'm a massive Frampton fan and would favour him to beat Scott, albeit only slightly and I also agree that the opposition needs to move up a level and that Quigg would be better ditching the "ordinary" belt and try and win one of the other straps as that trinket he holds breeds mediocre opposition and criticism

But if we're talking ability then IMO Quigg is top 10 p4p in the country,he's always exciting, always tries for a KO plus he's a spiteful puncher who's highly effective

Apart from getting decked from Arthur years ago and the miscalculation in the Salinas fight, which I lay half the blame on Joe Gallagher for waiting too long to let Scott off the leash, and I actually still thought Quigg won, then I've been very impressed all the time with Quigg

A fight with Frampton, Rigondeaux or Santa Cruz has got to happen before the year is out though

Veriton is a pillock who put forward a mad theory that Crolla was doing something dubious and that's what led to the attack, rather than it being down to the fact he is a good neighbour. He thinks there's a darker truth that's being ignored, possibly due to the Illuminati and their dark web of influence.

I have him on ignore, but palooka is a nice guy so when I saw his post I correctly assumed Veriton was on his soapbox again and palooka was trying to play devil's advocate so I replied.

Please don't quote him though,

Come join the party. Feel free to erect effigies in my honour etc ;)

It's a brave article actually and on the verge of ridiculing Quigg in some aspects, albeit not maliciously. Not something you often see in this age of "this interview was brought to you by [sponsor bollocks] " glossy nonsense.

Well done Danny and keep it up mate.

it's all a bit boring though isn't it, a fan boy making out that something ordinary elevates someone to an incredible citizen with super human powers of recovery. crolla chased some chavs, got battered and then went back to work. that's the average northerner's saturday night out.dooley gets caught in the headlights, can't get past his love of boxing and can't see them as real people. i like danny's pieces because he goes for the human angle, spends time, watches, evaluates, analyses. his last few pieces have been better than mcrae and they are also better than ote in Boxing Monthly, which is supposed to have the inside line on considered features. just telling it as i see it as a subscriber to both mags.

Really enjoyable read. Scott comes across well and captures his obsession with the sport.

The Kevin Mitchell feature and one a few years back about Jason Booth were excellent.

I used to really like Scott Quigg, and sent him a supportive tweet after the Salinas fight saying I thought he nicked it by a point.

Unfortunately he never responded, so he's now my arch enemy.

I really liked the Quigg article. I didn't know much about him and his personality and the article made me understand him a bit as a person. He came across as slightly eccentric but so, so determined and focused. I really respect people who have that character trait.... Because I don't and wish I did!
