If Mayweather was serious about fighting Mayfield or Berto, than this makes sense. But I don't believe he was.

Hey its a shitty match-up that's unlikely to be competitive or entertaining . So I won't watch.

That's your choice. But millions will watch it.
isn't that the great thing of freedom. You have a choice.

Of course it's my choice...I'm just announcing it like you decided to announce yours
It would be a huge underperformance if Floyd couldn't draw millions, wouldn't it?

Now when is the last time Floyd faced someone worse than Berto? Maybe if Karass scores a decent win he can get a shot too....
I'm hoping this is just a rumor prior to a better opponent being announced .

Right, Berto beaten by Soto Karass and Guerrero, both beaten by Thurman.
Also beaten by Ortiz beaten by Collazo who was also beaten by Thurman.
But of course Thurman doesn't deserve it.

If Berto gets the fight, it goes without saying that it's not about who deserves it most.

So now people are going to criticize Floyd for fighting on free TV against a pretty interesting opponent? I am pretty excited for a Floyd/Berto fight. Berto though lacking in the tools to get the job done, can't have his heart questioned and sometimes heart is all that you need.
Look, Floyd could have done a lot worse than Berto. He's had a crazy string of quality defenses going back quite a ways so i have no problem with him picking Berto.
Btw, if Floyd fought on PPV for this one it would be his record low in PPV buys so i think that had a big reason for him choosing to fight on free tv.

Just the type of fight I was hoping Floyd would take.. Then fighting on network TV for free is the icing on the cake. There will be a lot of people mad about a guy on the longest and hardest run in boxing taking a easy touch, but who cares. Floyd can fight who ever he wants, he's earned that perk and as was said before Berto isn't the worst option out there. It should be a showcase fight for Floyd, in which he should dominate from bell to bell.. But hey, guys like GGG have made a career out beating Berto caliber fighters and earning a monster reputation knocking them out, so I'd imagine in a perfect non biased world, Floyd should be labeled a monster for knocking out a 2nd tier fighter as well.. Or does he have to knock out 3 or 4 of them a year to earn that reputation? I need help with this one.

It's funny that he is catching hell for fighting the number one wba contender.
Though that rating is not deserved. He is rated #1 by the wba. And it is on free tv. No matter who he would of fought this time it would be a disappointment.
I'm just glad we don't have to pay for it.

Let's not mince the words - pathetic match up. Floyd is in a position to pick who he likes and he chooses Berto. Cowardly choice.

It appears Floyd is judged by incredibly stringent standards. If this isn't PPV, then I'm all for it.
He's obviously going to go for the Marciano record, so there's going to be another fight anyway.
Let's be honest, unless he faced GGG at 154, then he's a huge favourite against whoever he's likely to face at 147 or less.

it should be a showcase fight for floyd you say, against berto, anyway you guys try to spin this its still an incredibly ridiculous mismatch, its on normal tv for 1 reason, no one in their right mind would pay for it, hes giving back to the fans, fans that will make up excuses as to why this fight is ok because floyd earnt it, hes made 100s of millions of dollars fighting, i think that was his reward, not fighting someone ridiculously below his own level, you blokes crack me up with your hypocritical views, you bagged pacquaio for fighting algieri and wrightly so, it should never have happened, but its ok for floyd

Guys like GGG can't get opposition above Berto/Guerrero/Maidana level because people are ducking. Everybody wants to fight Floyd.
Also, GGG destroys them, and Floyd went life and death with Maidana.

obviously im not floyds biggest fan, but at least hes fighting a career welter. it could have been worse. if he'd fought berto when he was at his peak it mightve been competative, but thats what floyd does, he waits until they are past their best, then claims another scalp. if its not ppv he should be fighting kell brook, but then again, he wants to keep his 0. best of all , it means hes not fighting the undeserving khan, so if khan wants a payday he will have to take a beating from brook.

Difference is Pacquiao was coming off of a loss. If Floyd was coming off a loss, Berto would be perfect. And as of right now Algeri > Berto. Algeri was still undefeated when he fought Pacquiao and did better than Alexander against Khan. Berto couldn't even beat Karras

Of course he is judged by stringent standards given that he is generally considered the top fighter in the sport. There are several other options that would be far more interesting than Berto, who was knocked out by Soto Karass a few fights ago and hasn't done anything close to earning the fight since---even in his recent 'big' win over Lopez he beat a guy who almost always fell short against top opponents and who had been looking past it himself, being dropped and having a tough fight with shot former fringe contender Mike Arnaoutis. Of course Floyd would be a favorite against virtually everyone he could realistically face, but that doesn't mean some opponents aren't better than others---might as well stick him in with Frankie Gavin if you believe otherwise.

I'm not sure that Floyd would actually be able to knockout most second tier welterweights, but if his career consisted of beating nothing but that type of opposition he rightfully wouldn't be ranked as high as he is now, just like we don't generally see GGG ranked at the top of P4P lists even though I think he is somewhat overrated.
GGG seems to be in your head a lot man.

It's funny that a boxing fan would appeal to ABC ranking of a non-mandatory challenger to defend a fight. It's also funny that you'd do that but in the next sentence admit that Berto doesn't deserve the ranking....so then why care about it?
I wouldn't have been disappointed with Thurman, Brook, Khan, Lara, Garcia, Bradley to name a few. Of course Floyd has beaten quality opponents for years and this fight will rightly mean nothing in the larger picture as long as he wins, but to me Berto is still a very disappointing opponent because a large amount of evidence suggests can't remotely compete on this level; he already lost to two opponent Floyd easily beat, was stopped by someone Thurman outclassed and knocked out, and hasn't beaten anyone better than Luis Collazo, which happened in a controversial decision years ago. Then again, maybe I can see how someone thinks he's an interesting opponent if they really overrated shot Josesito Lopez and give Berto bonus points for being knocked out a few fights ago by Soto Karass.
