Quigg v Martinez

Think this could be a decent fight. Certainly a much needed step up for Quigg after the blown up Bantamweights he's been fighting.

Hopefully Martinez gives it a go, he showed he's not finished yet vs Frampton last year. I think Quigg will take a close decision but wouldn't be surprised if He has to dig deep at some point.

Like this fight. Martinez's last chance and we know what we are going to get with him he won't change his style at this stage of his career.

I feel Scott will have questions asked of him and I am leaning to Scott stoppage via body shot though there is an outside chance it could go the other way.

Quigg to stop him in the 8th or earlier and Hearn to make statements about why how Scott deserves a 50/50 split in the Frampton fight which isn't going to happen

This will happen. Despite the fact Framptons beat him twice comfortably albeit Kiko was competitive.

For Quigg to make a real statement he'd have to stop him convincingly and early. No bullsh1t stoppages.

Kiko was tough as old boots in Belfast last year.

But other than the 12th round, Carl very much fought off the back foot, and although entertaining, it was a more cautious Frampton with so much at stake. And he fought the right fight, with Martinez only getting one round off two off the judges.

I doubt we'll see Quigg fight like that as he has to make a statement here. A points win off Framptons scraps does him no favours at all.

Kiko still has the ability to ko - no doubt about that, having had Frampton buzzed in that first fight and his impressive record since then.

So it's a dangerous fight for Quigg. Only a ko will get him plaudits. I like the fight a lot after being initially unimpressed.

I think Martinez has been overrated a little bit over the last couple of years. He's definitely a good solid boxer and I know he's vastly improved since the Munroe fights, but he's not really far above European level imo. That being said, it is a tough test for Quigg, hope he comes through ok.

This is a good fight and although I fancy Quigg obviously, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Martinez pulls off a shock.

Martinez is definitely not the type to just turn up for the pay day, and he's got heavy enough hands to have even rock hard Carl Frampton looking cautious at times - not sold on Quigg just yet, his title run seems a bit on the manufactured side, plus he's been dropped hasn't he ? Kiko might provide a few shocks on the night...

Jamie Arthur had him on the floor he wasn't really hurt from what I remember.

Wonder who the ref will be for this fight.

His successful world title defences on paper were good though. Mathebula had the IBF belt and lost it to Donaire ( over 12) and he smashed Hasegawa in Japan who was world champ at weight above and below.

Yeah agree there. Martinez is a hard nights work for anyone out there. Hard as nails and always comes forward. I think Quiggs fitness will tell on the night and see him through on points or late stoppage but it's a dangerous fight. Martinez defences were impressive as you say. I think the ones you mentioned were away too in Africa and Japan?

I wouldn't be surprised if Quigg did a number on Martinez,Kiko is only 29 but hes been in a lot of tough fights and although he hasn't shown any signs of slippage, fighters with his tenacious style seem to get exposed rather brutally and Scott is one of those fighters who can make the most of these things

Safe money says Quigg wins a decision but I wouldn't be surprised to come on boxrec Sunday with a thread stating "Quigg will beat Frampton" after a demolition job by Quigg

Mathebula was in Spain had to travel for Hasegawa obviously

Quigg win by KO anyone?

If I put serious money on this would this be a stupid bet?

I know he has never been stopped but the odds are not too bad and it could happen, right??

No, not for me. It remains to be seen what that loss to Frampton has does to Martinez, but if Kiko is still in his prime - then Quigg would be doing well to get a points win out of this. A KO victory is beyond plausible in my opinion.

I don't think it's a ridiculous bet at all, Quigg can punch and Kiko can be hit. I know Kiko is a real handfull and Quigg can blow hot and cold at times but I don't think him winning by KO is out of the question.
I wouldn't risk a huge bet on it, but if the odds are decent I might put a couple quid on it myself.

Sure he's shown that he can blow-out substandard opponents (like Jamoye, Munyai & Silva) - but when he fought a vaild opponent like Otake, he couldn't get rid of him...
I'm sure that we can all recognize that KOing bums & KOing top 10ers are VERY different things...
keirw wrote:and Kiko can be hit.
Certainly Kiko has never been known for his defensive skill (and nor will he ever be) but he's a tough old boy and is a s resolute as they come in the Super Bantamweight division.

For me, nothing at all point to a Quigg stoppage.

If you're going to bet on a stoppage, make sure it's to the body if possible, I can see Quigg landing a good one to the ribs and causing Kiko some trouble, Quigg can rip it into the body as well as anyone.

Yeah a body shot is the only way I could imagine Quigg winning by stoppage. I'd not be betting much on it though.

we will find out more about Quigg in the first 12 minutes than we have in his entire career to date, I think.
